Good for you!  CHRIAS spouted a bunch of crap to me about the DS when I canceled my RNY appt there.  The more they hear that they're full of crap, the more likely they are to believe it!

I'm the support group leader that Emily talked about.  Please click back over to her post and read the responses I have made.  I try to stay up-to-date on all the wls procedures and knowing that only one surgeon in our state of Florida did this surgery, I wondered why.  That's when I talked to my surgeon and you'll see what that conversation was about in another post I did under Emily's post.

My biggest concern is that Emily had done her homework and was sure this was the right choice for her.  She's self pay and is looking for a quick weight loss and I'm a bit concerned about the bowel problems while she's teaching class.

I'm always learning.  This is all very interesting to me. I researched my own surgery for 2 years before I approached a surgeon.  I just had to be sure....as anyone should.

Ok, I can't help myself, sorry...

Is your BMI really still 45? Because I consider that a heck of an unsafe statistic for the lap band. Are you still recommending lap band over DS at your groups? Really?

That's nice, dear.  However, I was neither talking to nor referring to you or Emily.  I was talking to Amanda about a personal experience with a surgeon's office in Delaware.  Please try reading posts before tacking on your boilerplate response.

But *she* is concerned about Emily having intestinal issues and embarrassing herself in front of her classroom.... I do believe *you* could address that, teacher!

Normal BMI (24.9)  =  159#:  would have to compromise my muscle mass to get here without plastics, so this is not a goal.

And look at how far you've come now!
I'm sure you're just telling everyone that you're loosing weight slowly on purpose, because quick weight loss is so dangerous, right?

As for the losing too much weight too fast, that statistic actually belongs to the RNY. The weight loss curve for RNY is sharper than the DS in the beginning, however the DS does catch up at about the year mark. That's when the DS goes past the RNY. So much for losing it too fast. And does she think that losing 80% of your excess weight is a bad thing? Because that's where the stats put the DS.

Idiots abound. You can't do anything about their preconceptions. Well, except beat them about the head and shoulders with a stic****il they see the light.

All that can be confirmed from that experience is that taking any advice from that group leader will be dangerous.  For an uninformed person who has no interest in learning on their own how to best care for their nutritional health, the DS is extremely dangerous and should never be performed on them.  You've already taken steps NOT to be that person.  Keep with us and you'll learn through our own experiences and sharing.  You've got us 24/7/365 and don't have to wait a month to get an answer at a "support meeting".
