Question for anyone who has had their DS done

I am one step away from paying for the DS and I was wondering for the people who have paid or not to tell me if they would. I am scared to make this financial leap for just me! I have never spent this kinda money ever, besides our house. I think I need reassurance that this is a good thing to do. I know I want the surgery, but pay big bucks for scares the hell out of me.

Thanks from Manitoba

No, I don't have insurance. I am from Canada and we don't have any Dr.'s doing the DS right now.

Ds is the surgery for me I know that over years of research and waiting lists of Dr.'s even for the RNY.

I was going to have the RNY but it is years to get that done also and not what I want.

What is your quality of life worth? I always put everyone else's needs in front of mine and I got lost somewhere along the way. I decided that I am just as important as everyone else and this was FOR ME! I am pre op though and not a veteran.

You are right I know I want to live a healthy life, I just have never spent this kinda of money. I am

scared it is going to make me live Bond my means. I lost my mother when she was 56 years old

do to obesity. Years of  high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and kidney failure took its

toll on my mother. I don't want to die in my fifties. I am scared because I think that I am being

selfish spending money on just me. I do know if I am healthy than I can be a better mother and  wife.

Thanks for your reply!

I can honestly say that there is no way on this earth I would have lost 115 pounds in 10 mos., except through the DS. I know I would not have been compliant with the RNY program--I have a real fat tooth, and I adore meat. Having the safety net of malabsorption makes me not worry about whether I'll be struggling with regain in another year, as I see at least one close friend (who had the RNY) doing.

But I'm still in the honeymoon. Most people, whether DS, RNY, VSG or band are fairly happy with their surgery choice for the first 2 years. Look at what people 2 or more years out are saying, to get the best answer to your question.

Edited to clarify.

With great power (the DS!) comes great responsibility.

If I had had to pay the whole thing I'm not sure what I would have done.  But now, knowing what I know five months out, I would have been a FOOL not to have paid for it.

My only regret is that I didn't have the DS 20 years ago.

I could have had RNY paid for 100% right down the street from my house.  I self-paid for the DS and it is the best thing I have ever done for myself and my family (in the long run).  I am worth the price of a good used car!!

At the time, I flew to Brazil and paid a little over $13,000. 00 for everything, airfare, hotel, etc.

I self paid to get a revision to DS and it's the best money I've ever spend, best investment I've ever made and I've made some very good investments. I also had some complications, so the total bill ended up being about $40,000.00. Pffft, I drive a 4X4 Diesel pick up truck that cost more than that, ya think I'm not worth more than the truck I drive?

It's just money; you can always make more money, your life is the only one you get. I would do it again in a heartbeat, wouldn't even question or hesitate.
