DS question

Nah, after someone from PA and someone from NJ (yours truly) called his close- by hospital and both got word that they do INDEED perform RNY for Medicaid recipients (though somebody might be intuitively trying to weed out the total fucktards like him), he magically found the $800 it would cost him to go a full, um, three or four hours away, to Austin to the "good" surgeon who "really" does RNY on losers like him.

Of course, Jesus made it all happen, not strangers who know how to ask properly phrased questions in complete sentences.

What would Heinrich Heine say about Socrates?:

In dark ages people are best guided by religion, as in a pitch-black night a blind man is the best guide; he knows the roads and paths better than a man who can see. When daylight comes, however, it is foolish to use blind, old men as guides.

Yep, that is the cult church, Followers of Christ Church, in Oregon City, Oregon.  The teenaged boy's parents have since been convicted and sentenced and are now in prison where they belong.

PS:  I suggested to that Jesus freakazoid earlier in this thread that he join the same church.  Because his head obviously isn't screwed in correctly, I doubt that he'll follow thru.

In the RNY, they cut your stomach apart and staple it---VERY dangerous. And the 98% they don't use, they just leave inside you hanging there. UGH!!!

The differences between RNY and DS that are important to me:
1) More normal-sized meals with the DS.
2) No fear of dumping.  I like sweets and I want to have them on occassion without the fear of a dumping episode.

My recovery was fine; no complications.  I was in the hospital for three days, back to work after 3 weeks.

One year out, I poo once a day, eat almost like a normal person, and look like a normal person.  It's the best I could have hoped for!

What was recovery like?
Had the energy of a slug and was taking 2-3 naps a day until about week 7.  Could eat only a few bites before feeling full and having to try again about 1/2 hour to an hour later.  Had to make conscious efforts to take in fluids.

how long was hospital stay?
5 nites.  Would have left after 3 but had potassium issues and high output in my JP drain that the doctors wanted to monitor.  Both resolved on their own.

what are results for you?
Nearly 22 months post-op and don't feel like I had surgery.

are there common problems?
My clothes get loose as I lose weight.  I buy most of my clothes on sale at Kohl's and Penney anyway.  I recently bought 4 pairs of Lee jeans on sale at Kohl's.
Your driver's seat will have to be moved up several notches as you lose weight.
You won't be able to eat much during the first few months post-op.

One of the reasons I chose the DS is that my then-primary insurer covers DS but not the VSG.  Also, I wanted a fully-functioning stomach with the pylorus valve intact and to be able to eat like a non-WLSer and not have to worry about dumping, puking, or getting the foamies.  Plus, I wanted to be able to take meds like a non-WLSer.

Reason I didn't want RNY:  When the local TV station was doing a medical investigation of "gastric bypass" surgery in the late 1990s, the reporter used a two-liter bottle for the pre-op stomach and unscrewed a bottle cap from the same bottle for the post-op pouch.  I knew right away that I would never opt for that kind of surgery!

I have seen RNYers and lap-banders being able to eat only a couple of small bites before they say that they're full.  Plus, I did notice that one RNYer ordered an egg omelet at a restaurant, but she was able to eat only the ham dices in the omelet and not the egg itself.  At the same time, a lap-bander (banded in 2005) ordered some kind of a big salad but could eat only a few bites (the lap-bander told me that she would consider a revision to a DS someday).  To me, that's not real eating!

Also, I learned in the surgery prep seminar that RNYers have to cut foods into sizes of pencil erasers to accommodate their egg-sized (about 50 ML) pouches.  Real DSers eat just like any non-WLSer!

Many DSers have to travel hundreds and thousands of miles and even out of the country for theirs.  I traveled only a measly 5 miles and 15-minute drive for mine.
