I may have asked this before but not sure.  I wanted to know why everyone on this board chose to have the DS vs the RNY?  What was it that was "THIS IS IT" surgery for me?  thanks for your opinion in advance.

The DS offers the absolute best long term results.
The DS provides the best resolution of comorbidities.
The DS allows me to keep a fully functioning stomach (although 2/3 to 3/4 of it is removed, it still functions the same) which means I can take NSAIDs, etc for migraines, cramps, or whatever else I'd need some for since I don't have a pouch, stoma, or blind stomach that cannot be scoped normally.
The DS lifestyle seemed the most livable.  I don't have to diet in the traditional sense.  I don't have to feel guilt for eating full fat foods like cheese and red meat.  I don't have to live in fear that my weight loss will be short-lived.

Here is a link to the same question that was asked recently.

After months and months of research on ALL of the weight loss surgeries,  I found that the long term statics for keeping the weight off are best with the DS.  I knew I could lose the weight (did it before I had the surgery), but my main concern was being able to keep the weight off.  I thoroughly researched each surgery and the DS had the best statistics out of any of the others.  I then went on these boards and read as much as I could from each of the boards to find out how in real life the surgery was working for everyone and found that alot of people were going to the DS board with revision questions and there was nothing about revising from a DS.  I joined every Yahoo group out there just to make sure.  I am a very analytical person so it took me a long time to make sure it was right for me.  I truly made the right decision for ME.  Do your research on all of the different surgeries and make sure you select the right one for you!  DSFACTS.com has great information on the DS! I felt that the band had too many complications and I wasn't willing to go to the Dr. Office every 3 months for a fill/unfill.  After researching the RNY and talking to some people that I know that have had the surgery, that was no longer even on the table for me.  The thought of having a blind stomach with my history of ulcers was a no brainer.  NO WAY!  I also didn't like the fact that there was no pyloric valve to regulate your food entering your intestinal tract.  Then I went on-line and ask some friends what they could eat and couldn't and when they were talking low fat everything and no steak and food getting "stuck" A LOT, the line was drawn.  I will be 4 months out next week and am 70 lbs. down from my surgery date.  You have to look at everything and what is right for you.  I knew I would be able to take my vitamins and supplements everyday without fail and also knew I would be able to enjoy the variety of proteins that we eat, but also eat low carb.  I even did the low carb diet before I made my final decision just to make sure I could do it!  (My husband lost 80 lbs, I lost 30 lbs).  This is not a diet to me at all, it is a wonderful lifestyle change that I am thankful I made.  It has changed my life on many levels but for me, I'm a happier, healthier person than I was 6 months ago.

Thank you.  Like you I am a very analytical person myself and that is why I am doing all this research.  I have also done a lot of reading but now wanted real advice.

thanks

Go to DSFacts.com - and read.  There is a RNY vs DS article that is very informative!

I am pre-op..but wouldn't consider the RNY after doing my research!!  Have YOU researched the different WLS options?  Please do.  This is YOUR LIFE!  :-)

Personally, here is why I am planning on the DS:
1) no dumping
2) eat more and more normally - not dieting the rest of my life(RNY)
3) superior weight loss
4) much higher chance of KEEPING the weight off!!!!
5) can drink with meals
6) can take NSAIDs

That is my short list. :-)

Please gather all the information you can before making such a huge decision!

I wish you the best.

Don't mean to sound "preachy" - and totally understand you wanting 'real life advice'.  :-)

I'd just read a post on another board - and it was obvious to me they had NOT researched their options.....so may be been a little ruffled by that when I replied to you.  Oops!

Happy to hear you're doing your homework!!!  I'm sure you will make the right choice for YOU.

What brought me to the DS was the fact that I can take NSAIDs (ibuprofin, advil, aleve, etc.), where with the RNY or band you can't.  I have bad arthritis and stenosis, and know NSAIDs are necessary for my long term pain management.

But what sold me on the DS was it's track record. The long term data (15 yrs out) shows that the DS has a much higher success rate for losing and keeping the weight off than any other WLS.  Also,  people with the DS can eat almost normally (although in smaller amounts).  There's no lifetime of "dieting" on only healthy, low-fat, low-calorie food, and exercise is optional (although certainly encouraged).  Almost everyone who is successful with the RNY is eating low-fat, low-calorie foods and exercising big time.  If I could do that, I wouldn't have needed WLS in the first place!  Plus, I have mobility issues that make exercise difficult, so it's not an easy option for me.

I'm three months out and, as of this morning, down 61.5 lbs, and eating just about anything I want!  No dumping, sticking, vomiting, etc, and I have more energy and enthusiasm than I have in years!  I love my DS and am so thankful the NSAID issue pointed me in this direction!

You can read more about the DS at www.dsfacts.com  and www.duodenalswitch.com.  Good luck on your journey!

I am a baby DSer, but I have some new perspective I think I can share with you. The reasons for getting the DS are many, and easily found within this forum - the hard facts show it is a better solution for long-term maintenance of EWL, and you will lose the highest percentage of EWL than any other surgery. I believe the DS has the ability to change our metabolisms to something like a "normie", a naturally thin person.

Now my personal observation: Last night I went to my first big DS support meeting. There were probably close to 40 people who'd had the DS there, and I think the furthest out person in attendance was 8 or 9 years. It was a potluck. And anyone further out than a year was able to eat a plate of food that looked NORMAL. Seriously. They could get a plate, load it up pretty well (not the pre-op "I'm 300 lbs and can roll my chair right up to the buffet" amount, but a normal amount.) These folks could eat a normal-sized potluck plate and are STILL MAINTAINING THEIR LOSS, if not continuing to lose when necessary.

Being three weeks out, I was able to take a nibble. But it makes me happy to think I will eventually be able to eat like a normal person.

That's my $.02.
