Confused about Dreamfields Pasta low carb content

Hmmmmm.  Dreamfields Spaghetti says 5 digestible carbs per serving on the front of the box. But on the nutrition label it has 41g total carbs, with 5g of fiber.  In my math world that would make 36 net carbs per serving.  So are digestible carbs different from net carbs?  Just when you think you're getting it.....

 Hi Laura,

I was very confused about this too. According to the Dreamfields website:

Q.   Why do you say that Dreamfields Pasta only has 5 grams of digestible carbs when the nutrition label states that it has 41 grams of carbohydrates? A.   While the total number of carbohydrates is the same as traditional pasta, our patent-pending formula and unique manufacturing process protects all but 5 grams of carbohydrates from being digested. The Dreamfields fiber and protein blend creates a protective barrier to reduce starch digestion in the small intestine. The unabsorbed, or protected carbohydrates then pass to the colon where they are fermented, providing the same health benefits as fiber.

Q.   How are "digestible carbohydrates" different from "net carbohydrates"? A.   Dreamfields' "digestible carbohydrates" are determined by a clinical method that measures the blood glucose response of the whole food to establi****s content of digestible carbohydrates or glycemic load. This is unlike net carbohydrates, which is simply determined by estimating the digestibility of individual food components (e.g. subtracting fiber from total carbohydrates). The clinical testing is conducted at an independent clinical laboratory.

Many people with diabetes who consult with a registered dietitian or diabetes educator use a food’s Glycemic Index (GI) and Glycemic Load (GL) as tools to help manage their daily food intake and blood glucose levels.

Protected Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates that normally would be digested but are not digested due to a physical limitation. The added fiber and protein blend in Dreamfields creates a protective barrier to reduce the starch digestion in the small intestine. When the unabsorbed or protected starch reaches the colon and is fermented it provides many of the same benefits as fiber.

It all still sounds a bit hokey to me, and think it's a YMMV in terms of how many carbs are actually digested. I've seen some people on low-carb boards post that this made them go out of ketosis. I do use it once every couple of weeks and have not noticed it affecting my own loss, but I don't tend to be overly strict on the carb front.

Jenna to my rescue once again!  I didn't even think about looking for a Dreamfields' website. Thanks!

It sounds a little hokey to me too. But I've been really jonesing for some pasta lately so decided to finally give Dreamfields a try. I've been pretty strict on carbs until this week, and decided to get back on track tomorrow, so today's pasta day! I don't know if I should count it as 5 or 36 on my daily carb intake though. Couldn't anyone put one thing on the front of their box and something else on the government nutrition label? I guess they have to back it up with something to keep from getting sued, but I'm a skeptic at heart...

Thanks for the explanation though Jenna!

I personally think Dreamfields has so few carbs because when I eat it I throw it up.  It is the only thing I have eaten that comes straight back up.

Kewl!  I'm so glad to hear this!  Cuz I was looking for definitive proof that they are telling the truth about "protected" carbs (WTF?), and this sounds like IT!

LOL!
