More MONTANA Ideas!
Okay, I've been thinking more about this God's Country thing and have come up with a tentative kind of idea:
1. Pick your weekend: July 23-25 or July 30-August 1 (expandable to a Thursday to Monday schedule).
2. Most responders the first time sounded like they liked the idea of cheap, simple lodging with lots of running around/eating beef/possibly partying options. With that in mind, I am researching mom and pop type places in areas with which I am comfortably familiar.
Thus far, I'm liking a little place in Three Forks called the Fort Three Forks Motel and Campground. Anybody who wants to come with tent or RV would be accomodated, and there would be SIMPLE (but reportedly clean with decent beds) rooms for those who are less adventurous. A continental breakfast is included and reported to be generous, but since we want PROTEIN, we would go either right next door to the marvelous Wheat Montana www.wheatmontana.com or up or down the road to such places at the Cattlemen's Cafe (thus named because it's at the stockyard and has damned good simple MEAT BASED food lol) or the Iron Horse Cafe or similar delights.
It looks like the motel runs around $60/night. I doubt there's anything cheaper to be had that is licensed :-).
From there we would have myriad options to do things: Tour Lewis and Clark Caverns (which I did last summer, as "loyal readers" might recall; I dunno if I'm up for that again, but you're welcome to go without me), day trip to Virginia City/Nevada City, gorgeous countryside viewing at the Three Forks of the Missouri state park, book a river float trip, book a horseback pack trip, put together a day's worth of picnicking goodies and go hang at the Boulder Hot Springs http://www.boulderhotsprings.com/ (also available for lodging, but rather more expensive, and it is a 100% substance free property: no smoking, no booze, no other recreational substances) , go tour Butte (amazing place and well worth some running around), or Bozeman, or go to Big Sky....Possibilities abound.
Those who would fly in, would come in to Bozeman or Butte and have about an hour's drive. So car rental would be mandatory. Those driving in can find their way along I-90 or a couple smaller routes.
Yellowstone would be rather far for a day trip, but could easily be worked in to a two-day (or longer) outing planned around this adventure. If anybody wants to pack me in their back seat I make a great and tireless native tour guide HINT HINT, and all I need is a place to throw my air mattress and a power plug for my BiPAP. Oh, and a functioning toilet or outhouse....
Glacier National Park would be a significantly longer outing from here, if anyone is interested. I would suggest planning a day to drive each way and two days in the park.

Hi Elizabeth,
For me it only makes sense to do a Thursday thru Monday (flying/driving on those days leaving the 3 day weekend for fun). Quick and dirty look at flights show it is a little cheaper to fly to Bozeman but I don't know if the savings would be lost due to higher car rental prices?
If I could share a car and share a room I would be more inclined to say yes.
I'm interested in seeing if anyone else is interested!!!
Not sure I can swing the flight/car/room/meals with out sharing the car and/or room.

If I decide to join you all, I'll be driving ... and driving right by Butte so could potentially arrange to pick up anyone flying in. Check to see if it's cheaper to fly into Spokane, Missoula or even Seattle for that matter. It's about a 12 hour drive from where I live.
My trip would have to include Yellowstone - so I might not spend the whole time with the gang, but it would still be good to meet everyone and spend at least one night!
I've got the whole wi-fi thing squared away with a new set up with Verizon ... though it looks like the hotel that Elizabeth mentioned has wi-fi.
So ... lots of potential here! I'll be watching to see what everyone else is planing to do

Well that is a little too far for me to drive or ride. I have a 2 hour drive to Charlotte where I fly from so I will want to fly in closer to our destination. But I hope to see you there!!!!
I'm going to send a note and ask everyone which weekend they prefer so we can at least nail that part down. Then I can work more on getting tickets and getting my dog sitting arranged.
Which weekend is best for you?
