DS Revision vs virgin DS
I have a question that I'd appreciate any answers on! On the average how much of a difference in success between the DS as a revision and a virgin DS? Does the revision typically have a more difficult time losing than the virgin DS? How is it different? First WLS surgery in 1982 gastric stapling, then lap band are the specifics.
I also have issues with metabolic syndrome which in and of itself makes it virtually impossible to lose, and I think I need more of a malabsorptive component.
Please, I really do not want to hear anyones opinion of the band...my questions are not about the band, but about my future success. So if anyone has any helpful info out there, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

I duuno if anyone knows what the answer to your question is; I've never seen any studies on the difference in weight loss for revisions v virgin DS. I've heard people quote their surgeons in saying that revision patients lose slower, but my surgeon; Dr. Rabkin didn't mention anything about it to me. In our discussions of my revision, (I also had the gastric stapling done back in 1980) all we discussed was the surgical difficulties in getting the revision done, but nothing about how I would have a more difficult time losing weight.
If you want to see what my weight loss was and is like, your can go to my profile and look at my OH Health Tracker and see it. It's hard to imagine how anyone could lose much faster than I did for the first couple of months. I went from 283 to 219 in 2 1/2 months, then stalled for 2 months etc. When you look at how other people lose, it's all over the place, whether they be virgin or revision DS. It does seem like the revisions lose slower, but I have no data to support this, it's just a general impression.
None of the WLS you've had have any real malabsorption of macro-nutrients (calories); the stapling did give you some malabsorption of micro-nutrients (vitamins & minerals) but no malabsorption of calories. The DS is nothing like anything you've experienced, with it you're going to malabsorb 80% of the fats you eat, 50% of the proteins and complex carbs. This malabsorption is for both micro and macro nutrients, which is why you will lose and why you need to supplement. You will absorb all the simple carbs and sugars your eat, so to lose weight, all you need to do is restrict the simple carbs and sugars. You get to eat all the proteins & fats you want to, you will not be able to overeat these things, your sleeve size makes in virtually impossible to eat to many protein and fat calories.
Probably a lot longer answer than you're looking for, but I don't think there is a simple answer to your question.

I'm considered a light weight. I'm 5'11" tall and weighed 265ish when I had my surgery. I weight 160 - 162 now and lost most of that weight in the first 8 months. I had no problem losing fast. I am a revision from an old stomach stapling done in 1990. But I think everyone is different so your gmmv. Good luck,, D..............
Hi, I am a revision from a stapling in 2006. I weighed 229 on the day of surgery, and today I weigh about 156i****hink my loss has been slow, compared to most, but I had a lot going on.
1) got pregnant at 4 months out and miscarried at 10 weeks.
2) had a humongous hernia
3) had hernia surgery (5 hernias in all) and a tummy tuck on 05-12
So, even with all that going on, and being a revision, the weight is still coming off....I am almost 9 months out and things are going awesome.
I think everyone is different, and from my time on the boards, it really varies; some virgins lose fast, some slow...some revisions lose slow, some fast....just depends.
I just have to say I love life a billion times more with the DS than I ever did with stapling!!! I can EAT and not gag to name one major thing I love!!

Part of the problem, in my opinion, is that the band has your body convinced it can survive (and not lose) on 600 calories a day by messing up your metabolism; that CAN (doesn't mean it WILL) cause slower weightloss than a virgin DSer who was holding steady on 3000 calories a day. I'm a revision and got to normal BMI at 15 months, which was a loss of over 150lbs, but I could eat like a 'normal' person with my VBG tummy (and still can).
FYI - not a cool thing to come asking for information or help and then tell people what they're allowed to respond. You could have just as easily ignored a few comments about the band being a crapband or diet with a choke chain, rather than dictate how people respond and express themselves.
Edited to correct at least one spelling error :)

Mary, good show. As long as we're setting communications rules...
You may reply to me on any day that ends with a "y." You may call me "Her Royal Highness." You may tell me I am pretty. You may tell me I look thin. However, you cannot pass go. You cannot collect $200.
That about sums it up. As you were.

Unfortunately, I remember you from years ago on the revision board.
I'm the poster child for metabolic disorder, so have given info freely about that there, and try to inform others if I have info that may benefit them.
But what I remember, is when a DSer shared info about why band over bypass or stomafix or rose procedure may not be in someones best interest, you felt the need to crucify anyone that suggested the DS may be a better choice, and to look into it.
Ironic that you're here, and since you were one of the only two people I have EVER blocked on OH, I'm thinking I unblocked you prematurely.
I know the helpful and knowledgeable DSers here will still help you (assuming they don't remember you and what an asshat you have been to anyone that even mentioned DS on the revision board) but you don't deserve the help. You didn't want it before, and were incredibly rude about any information you received that wasn't what you wanted to hear.
The attitude that still comes across in your question here shows you're still an asshat.
