Voltaren (Diclofenac) anti-inflammatory - okay for DSers?

Dr. put me on this for 30 days - 2 per day for bursitis in my hip as I'm facing a 7 hour plane ride to Canada on Saturday.  When hubby was on this med for only a week, his doctor also prescribed Pantoprazole for his stomach but mine didn't.

I don't want to be in pain, but I don't want to hurt my wee tummy either.

Thoughts?

Mickie

I take Diclofenac on a regular basis and have yet to have any problems.

My doctor put me on Voltaren gel just so we didn't have to find out if there would be a problem with the stomach.  If you are concerned about the effects on your stomach, or if you don't want to chance it you might ask for the gel.

BTW, I have taken other anti-inflammatory drugs without it bothering my stomach but I do so very sparingly because I don't want to risk damaging what little stomach I have left.  Sometimes it's a balancing act between pain management and stomach preservation.  :-)

NSAIDS act systemically so whether you take them by mouth or rub them on as a gel they can cause thinning of the stomach mucosal lining.  This applies to everyone, not just DSer's. If it were me, I would add a PPI if you are not already on one.  Also, do not take this or any NSAID on a long term basis without being aware of this side effect. I use NSAIDS when they are called for, but not long term for this reason.

I know they say DS can take NSAIDS.

So, leaving that aside. NSAIDS are dangerous drugs. It's not a matter of how much space they have. They are systemic. They go thru the blood stream. I've now known of two DSers who lost their DS to NSAIDS. I lost my original stomach to them, but had done the damage 10 yrs before WLS.

That said, taking any PPI with them, makes the action more brutal. They turn off ALL pumps, even the helpful ones. So, they take out the protective pumps.

OK. Your public service announcement is concluded.

Thank you for that public service announcement.    I always get a bit concerned when DS'ers state that they can take NSAID's.   Theoretically, they can, but I believe they must exercise extreme caution in using them, and as you said, we have the DS'ers around that have had problems to remind ous of that.   I use them very sparingly.   My mother, a non-DS'er, has destroyed her esophagus from years of taking NSAID's for a back condition.   She has severe Barrett's and can hardly eat anything at all.

Exactly

Rarely do I allow this to pass. lol

I mean, I was 36 and denied for insurance because I had had too many ulcer refills? Why? Too much erythromycin, too many NSAIDS. *I* didn't know.

Being HMO, they didn't hear a word I said when I said, "That one hurts", because "that one" was the cheap one.

And it was already too late for my poor tummy tissue. When I was 44 and had surgery, I'm sure I coulda eaten a 1200 SF house for a snack, so it wasn't "size" that mattered.

I didn't know that PPI's make it worse!
Every time I have had them , the Dr. has added a PPI or made sure I was on one. Crap, you can't trust any of 'em.

Thanks for the info,
Michele

MD logic.

I got this from an RN friend of mine who extracted it from a journal. She was also RNY and wondered why peace in her knees meant chaos in her gut.

As someone told me: check engine light goes on in car. MD smashes light (treat the symptom)
ND pulls over and crawls under car to see why

Kinda sums it up
