bruising(blood just underthe skin)

The last few months I've had a few areas on my forearms that I've obviously bumped and they have blood spots just under the skin.  This happened to my mother, but she was in her 70's, and hey I'm only in my early 50's.  I'm starting to get concerned, and thinking that the K, C, or folate levels are out of wack.  I do have an appt. with the hematologist next week.  I saw him last year for anemia...and I don't think he fully understands the DS. The referral to see him again went in because my ferritin has been high for six months.

Is there anyone out there has some wisdom or experience on bruising?

Thanks

Kaye G.

Are they small spots, kind of like pinpoint?  That's petechiae.   It can be caused by a clotting disorder or Vitamin K deficiency, to my knowledge.   I'm glad you are going to the hematologist, as he should be able to provide you with some causes and solutions.

I was going to post about the same thing. I notice that, after for example carrying in grocery bags, I had little bruises like blood blisters on my arms from the bag handles. I planned to ask about it at my one year apointment and see if I had any deficiancies at that time.
I will be looking, with interest, at the responces you get from this thread.

I am not a medical doctor and this is only my personal experience.

I saw my doctor for this a couple months ago.  My vitamin D, K, A, and E were low on my last labs, but I switched to taking them separately (from Vitalady) and the problem has resolved.  I got them after carrying in groceries or other things from the car.  Haven't had one in quite awhile now.  It was similar to a blood blister, I guess ... that's about as close a description as I can give ... but it was described to me as bleeding under skin and the blood would be reasorbed in a short period of time.  It was.

There are other possibilities, so seeing your doctor is the best choice.

I'll be interested in seeing the replies to this one. I bruise so easy it's sickening.

I've heard that bioflavanoids help strengthen capilaries--especially rutin, monoxerutin, diosmin, troxerutin and hidrosmin.  They're not expensive if I recall correctly, so a good bioflavinoid complex might be something to try.

I have taken bioflavenoids to counter act this condition for over a year.   I haven't noticed any change.  My pharm. said you can maybe slow it down but not make the condition any better.  I hate it,  I bleed under my skin if you look crossed eyed at me.  I had this condition before my surgery but it seems to be getting worse.  I think I read some where that hemroidal (sp.) cream might help toughen up your skin.  Haven't tried it yet.

Fat protects us from bruising, even in areas where we are not visibly 'fat'.

As WLS patients we don't just become 'thin people' with well distributed fat, we tend to lose it everywhere and our skin thins out all over.

Unless its an alarming amount of bruising, I wouldn't suspect its a disorder, but it can't hurt to check your levels if you have insurance. I'd more likely suspect you've just lost your 'fat armor' and just bruise easily now.

Thanks everyone for the responses.  I was hoping to see the hematologist next week but they called today, saying he had to go out of town.  Now, I have no idea when I'll be able to get in.  I've been waiting for about 4 months already. So much for our health care system.
Oh well, I'll have more time to do research!  You guys gave me some more ideas to read about.
