Nothing sounds or taste good to me any more
Hello All,
I am about 3 wks out from Surgery and nothing taste good or sounds good, the thought of food makes me sick. Is this normal and how long should I expect it to last?
Also, I am very nauseated in the mornings. Is it because I go so long with out food or water? What should I do to help the nausea in the mornings? And how long will this last?
Thank you all in advance for your help.

Hi Deann - congratulations on your new DS! This, and the nausea question come up about once a week on these boards, so you are in good company. Yes, both issues are very normal. Even at four years out, I still have days when nothing tastes or sounds good. I drive my husband, who is a chef, nuts, because he'll offer to cook me anything I want and I turn my nose up at it, LOL. In regard to the nausea - yes, it's just like when one is pregnant. You don't want to let your stomach get too empty. It also helps to take some type of acid inhibitor. Nexium worked for me, and I only needed to take it for a few months. Peppermint tea first thing in the morning help me too.

I had the morning nausea thing, and what worked for me was eating a high-protein snack just before bed. I also keep a glass on the nightstand, and drink a little anytime I awake during the night.
The nothing-tastes-good thing I can't help you with. Even 6.5 years post-op, I have occassional days when I feel this way. They are rare, though. MAKE yourself get in some protein---sometimes tasting food increases your appetite.

Sounds pretty normal to me. Nothing tasted or appealed to me for probably the first 9 months or so. I can still pick out certain flavors in food particularly salt, cooked foods taste like brine to me at times. Everyone else in family gobbling it up. Even thinking about chocolate or vanilla early out would gag me. Strawberry Atkins shakes were my favorite. The morning nausea is probably from stomach acid on an empty stomach. Drink or eat small sips or bites of something like a cracker. If I gulp drink down on an empty stomach even now it hits like a ton of bricks and hurts. Slow and easy, you're only 3 weeks out give it time. Take advantage of this fast weightloss period. Pam
Same goes for me. I'm just about 3 weeks out and even though I am not nauseated, the thought and even the smell of some food just turns my stomach. I am taking Prilosec every morning and every night before bed so that may help with the nausea, so you may want to try something like that. But for me so far, I'm just working on getting in my liquids and some protein during the day. Yesterday I did try some vegetable beef soup but just drank the broth and that was pretty good. Although room temperature seems to set better on my stomach then icy cold or hot.

I'm three weeks out and nothing appeals to me either. I've read the warnings but am still disappointed that my favorite foods are tasteless (or yucky) to me now.
Fortunately for me I'm not having the nausea. I try to put a little protein in my stomach every two hours even if I don't feel hungry.
I hope the day returns for both of us when food will be pleasurable again!

I agree with most of the above posts. I feel sick in the morning until I can get a few sips of something on my tummy. I have to take little sips as I like my drinks ice cold and if I gulp, my tummy cramps up. I have also found that I get sick later in the day if I don't keep a drink with me. I am two months out today and just starting to want to taste things. Since I have had complications, I am having to take it really slow.
Just make sure you are very very hydrated. At 3 weeks out I had to go get a bag of fluids (no big deal at all) which helped me so much. I was able to stay hydrated after that and started feeling so much better.
By the end of the week you need to be getting at least 30 grams of protein a day, from powdered drinks or food or a mix.
Keep sipping!!!!
