old wives tales??Vets can i kindly get ur attention plz
Hi,
I ve been trying to find long term results on sleeve but , i couldnt find any one more than 3 + years out.You guys also have sleeve as part of DS.Since DS has been around for quite a while i think the best place to get help is from you guys.
My questions are
1) Does sleeve stretches over time and how much and if possible could you guys plz write down here how much are you able to eat in one sitting compare to when u were earlier out.
Here is what VSGer's say the strechy part fundus is thrown away so your stomach cant get back to its orignal size and there is no hunger after VSG its only acid that makes u feel like u r hungry but anti acids fix that problem.I havnt had the VSG or yet but for me it sounds like old wives tales
Vsger's are too early out to make a final conclusion about it cant get back to its orignal size.
Plz kindly help me out with it as you guys are way further out than VSGer's.
I am light weight a BMI 36.7 cant decide between VSG and DS
Thank you so much

Well, my sleeve was about 5 ounces and now, at only 9 months post-op, I bet I can eat a good 8 ounces of food if not more some days. (There are also some days where I can eat less.)
Not getting hungry again and having antacids resolve "hunger" is bull**** You'll be hungry again. I get ******g ravenous if I go too long without eating and I think most DSers would agree with me on that one. Of course, you get full a lot quicker.
There are many "lightweights" on this forum who've had the DS and done well. Don't rule it out.
If you've not totally ****** up your metabolism by years of yo-yo dieting it is possible that a restriction only procedure would work for you. Thing is, there aren't long term studies out there so you're kind of going on faith. Continue to research your options and maybe meet with more than one surgeon (who does both VSG and DS) to get more opinions.
Good luck!

Well, the bit about the fundus being thrown away is true, and that the stomach tissue that's left over is harder to stretch. But it does stretch, some, which is good because that makes it easier to get the nutrition we need. The malabsorption is what keeps the weight off with the DS. With the VSG, I'm afraid that late regain is going to be a problem. But you're right, the long-term studies just don't exist yet.
Now the bit about never being hungry is just not true. I don't get ravenous like pre-op, but I do get hungry every few hours. It just doesn't take much to satisfy the hunger.
For the comparison you asked for: at one month out I could eat half of a small hamburger patty. Now, I can a whole big one and half a small order of fries. No bread.
Good luck on your journey! Keep asking questions and reading. Be logical and honest with yourself and you'll find the right path.

There is really no definitive answer to this as doctors have different ways of sizing a sleeve. My doctor goes with a smaller stomach and longer common channel. But he has told me I will probably be able to eat 1/2 or less of what I ate pre-op. So far it's been less in the 4mo since my surgery. It will in almost every case stretch a bit.
I am still fairly new out so my sleeve hasnt stretched yet but I dont think it will ever be possible for my sleeve to stretch to the size my stomach was before. I have a 2oz sleeve and 90% of my stomach was removed. Even if my sleeve stretches to 15 oz or even 20 oz which is unlikely, that is still less than half the size it was before. From what I read, the human stomach can hold aprox 135 oz, possibly more if you are SMO. My sleeve would rupture before it could stretch out that much.

Immediately post-op, I could eat two teaspoons of Taco Bell's Pintos and Cheese. Or MOST of a soft boiled or poached egg.
Four and a half years later...we went to Claim Jumper a couple of nights ago. Ordered the RibEye...16 ounces, it says. (I suppose that's the pre-cooked weight.) I ate maybe a third of it--so maybe 3.5 - 4 ounces) and some delicious asparagus and a LITTLE bit of carrot and zucchini...as in the photo.
I could not have eaten more than a bite of the steak four and half years ago and two teaspoons of beans would not have cut it the other night.
Early out: 2-3 bites.
now (almost 3 years out): umm...lots! lots and lots. For dinner I ate probably 8-10 ounces of chicken breast with mushrooms in a heavy cream sauce. I eat a regular sized meal, I'd say. So, for lunch I can eat a whole sandwich with a side of peanuts or something, and maybe a (diet) soda.
If I go to a buffet, I can fill up a plate, eat all/most of it, rest a bit, and then go back for a maybe a 1/2 plate more of my favorite stuff. I know I can eat like 4-5 eggs + cheese at once. I definitely don't eat like a bird or anything.
And if I get in a mindless snacky mood, I can totally down like a half a box of triscuits with cream cheese.
The other night, I went out to dinner and I was STARVING, starving, I tell you! I went to Red Lobster, ate half a cheese biscuit, my entire salad with balsamic dressing, a pound of snow crab legs, an order of shrimp scampi, and a few french fries.
Verdict: I'm glad I malabsorb!

I'm 3 yrs out and yes I can definitely eat more now than I could even a yr ago. But it all depends on what I'm eating the denser the protein the less I can eat. I can eat a large size salad? But give me a say wendy's cup of chili (hot)and I'm full. Pour that same dang cup of chili on a side salad and I can eat the whole dang bowl! I have to take into account of what it is. Like tonight I was able to eat 2 scrambled eggs with 2 slices carb short toast and cup of milk. Granted I was stuffed but make those same two eggs hard poached and I have hard time finishing one. Go figure?
Have you had previous weight loss surgery? Like the lapband perhaps? The reason I'm asking is because the VSG is a restriction only procedure like the lapband. With the DS your sleeve will stretch but you will always have the benefit of the malabsorption. Are you in Canada by chance?

I was a light weight too. Check out my blog.
I get hungry ...real hunger...every 2 hours. I just have to eat protein OFTEN.
I can eat HUGE amounts of food. I ate an entire dinner plate of taco salad tonight in one sitting.
I think the sleeve helped me loose the weight, but the SWITCH is what is going to help me keep the weight off.
My problem, even tho I was a light weight, was not just with the quantity of what I ate. I had metabolic issues that the DS resolved.
But the hunger comes back and the amount I can eat has increased.
