Hey can I invite a couple of DS mates as well?  I was thinking what a blast it would be.

EN,

A couple quick pieces of advise to keep the "soreness" down ( I give lessons and posture is a huge petpeeve with me).

#1)Sit up straight roll shoulders back, do not hunch or you WILL regret it big time.

#2) Assuming your riding in a western saddle sit in the area between crotch and ass. If you sit too far on your ass be prepared for some serious lower back pain.

#3) Heels down at all times (really good stretch for the calves). Thats more a safety thing, the best one to know!

I could go way farther but that will help eliminate bad pains, you will probably get some good ones though.

Thanks dear cowgirl, I remember those particular bits, especially heels DOWN, as Dad taught that one very very hard. My sister got dragged once as a young girl newly in the saddle (we all learned bareback first), so you can imagine how even more vigilant he was after that episode.

I'm gonna have legs like jelly. That will be the biggie.

EN,

Bless your father is what I can say. Horror stories galore with people not following thoes 3 rules. Hell I ride heels down bareback, it just should be ingrained to everyone who rides.

Ah jelly legs, I still get thoes and I've been back riding consistantly for 4 years. Mainly after riding saddleseat horses, thats a killer workout for the legs...ok the whole dang body. Western not as much, well when its Western Pleasure.

If you ever come to Michigan you can come ride my Arabian (yes I have him covered and also Michigan has the Equine Act which covers me too), my thoroughbred mare is on retirement at only 14 (damn the racing career before I got her). He'll do whatever you want, huntseat, saddle seat, western pleasure, native costume, low hunter jumper (2'6"), bareback (he has pony skin though, lol), trails and knows how to cut cattle. I never get bored riding him, lol.

Happy Trails today!

If I could look like this on a horse, I'd reconsider my entire relationship with horses...and camels and elephants and buffalo and even large dogs:

Meanswhile, I'll just remember that the last time I got on a horse (about 40 years ago and I was NOT heavy), he/she/it decided I wanted "Reverse" and after we took out a few yards of chainlink fence*, I managed a kind of Annie Oakely dismount, never again to touch ass to saddle (or horsie spine.)

Not Meant to be a Cowgirl

*The horse owner, a friend, kept apologizing--for years I think--because she said it was her fault that something was cinched wrong and any weight at all would pinch something on the horse and it wasn't my fault and it wasn't the horse's fault...but I just decided to stick to cars and buggy rides from then on.  But I probably looked kinda cool flying through the air like I did.

LOL Sue,

I forgot to put a disclaimer on that pic, that is my youngest sister riding my Thoroughbred mare. Even though she learned everything she knows from me. (Yeah she has one of thoes bodies that people want, and thus looks better in the show clothes, LOL)

I sure wish I looked that good up there, I'm getting close but not that good (bad knee prevents the absolute correct posture for me).

Ah the fun of flying dismounts. Yeah I made the booboo once of asking a horse to jump a fence to early. Well I made it over the fence, LOL, front flip and amazingly landed on my feet. That could never be repeted again thats for sure.  As I said made that mistake once, never asked a horse to jump to early after that slip up but doesn't mean I haven't come off at other times, lol. Most were unusual cir****tances.

Its ok not everyone is meant to try to pull off being a cowgirl. Buggy rides can be quite fun though, I've trained half dozen ponies to drive (oh the times with thoes little buggers), just neither of my two horses pull as I never finished their training to drive, basically never had a buggy attached they know everything else.
