Lisey's sister Kerry posted the follwing update using Lisey's account. Post well wishes on her surgery support page here: http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/members/status.php? N=B1224178263

I hope I'm doing this right, I've never posted on Obesity Help. I'm Lisa's sister Kerry. She asked me to let you all know that she went to the emergency room this morning, had a CT scan which confirmed she had a bowel obstruction. She was immediately sent to surgery where the surgeon laporscopically realized that somehow her bowel and appendix got wrapped around each other causing the appendix to die and turn black. It was removed and the bowel was unkinked and straightened out. Thankfully the bowel pinkened up again so he was able to leave the bowel intact.

Lisa's prognosis is very good. Barring no unforseen complications, she should be released tomorrow or Monday and should be able to go back to work in a week.

Lisa was hesitant to go to the emergency room this morning but did so largely because of your insistence that she go so THANK YOU from Lisa and from her family for recognizing the symptoms of bowel obstruction and urging her to go. If she had waited another day or two, something much worse would have happened to her.

Thank you for posting this update EN.

I read her other post long after it had been posted, and felt sick to my stomach as I read, since it was way too similar to my own obstruction, and the delay in diagnosis almost killed me.  I did have some tissue death, and I was afraid she was losing intestines as she vacillated on what to do.

I was concerned when there hadn't been an update, as the original post was pretty stale. I can stop checking OH every half hour now.

I'm so glad she's been well taken care of.    Also - this is very important  to any DS'er.   My surgeon told me, when he did my internal hernia repair,  that a regular surgeon or typical ER doc or radiologist really has no idea what to look for when interpreting CT scans in suspected Peterson's or internal hernis and to ALWAYS insist that your DS surgeon be contacted as well.    Internal hernias are what usually lead to obstructions.   When a person loses weight, either through WLS, tradtional weight loss, or even pregnancy, free space is created in the abdominal cavity.   This enables the bowel to float around more, which can then become twisted, kinked, or in Lisey's case, wrapped around the appendix.  For some reason, it is more commin in lap patients (whereupon open patients have incisional hernias).   One must know that anytime unremitting pain is present, it is always imperative that it be checked out.  Insist upon a CT - not an xray.   Insist that your DS doc be contacted as well.

Hear hear! Dr. Peters told me the same thing about always DEMANDING that ER folks, radiology etc. consult with a knowledgable surgeon.

I am privileged to have Dr. Greenbaum and colleagues in my backyard, so if I get a bellyache, I'll go to their ER. But if I get a gut issue that needs attention and can wait a couple hours, I'm hopping in the car and heading for Scranton.
