Any ideas for good tasting protein sources

I know the basic foods that carry protein but how about protein shakes, supplements, powders, anything that tastes good? Websites or stores would be very helpful! Also I know it's in the paperwork somewhere but how much protein daily post op again? Thanks so much!

I like the 2.8-oz Protica Profect 25-gm protein bullets! Especially when I was first out, I was VERY sensitive to the "protein drink" taste, and these were about the only thing I could choke down. I'd rather guzzle a little bullet than sip-sip-sip 8- to 16-oz protein drinks! They have a juice-like taste, and some flavors are better than others. I don't like the 50-gm protein ones; they are too thick. I've tried other brands of protein bullets that can be bought at GNC, Costco, etc., but have thought they were all kinda yucky and thicker, too. Almost five years out, and the Proticas are still the only protein drink I like! There's a link on my website (in my signature line) that you can click on to get to where you order them if you're interested. Good luck on finding something that you like!

100 grams daily minimum on protein postop. But this does not mean from the time you go home from the hospital. We talk here about a rule of thumb that says 30 grams by 30 days postop, 60 by 60, 90 by 90, so that at three months out you are routinely taking in 100 grams of protein daily. Protein malnutrition takes a while to happen, so it's okay to take a few weeks to build up your protein intake. But notice that we're talking about getting in double the usual adult minimum daily requirement by 90 days postop.

What kinds of supplements are palatable is totally individual, AND it's likely to change once you have surgery. I suggest that you go to www.vitalady.com and order every supplement that sounds good in sample size and taste test them before surgery. If something tastes marvelous, order three or four samples, NOT a five pound container. Michelle (Vitalady) knows about the whole postop taste change thing :-)/.

A common taste change thing is that things taste too sweet. I LOVED Unjury before my surgery, for example, and couldn't gag it down afterwards. Then they came out with their chicken flavor, which was a lot more tolerable, but still tasted like chemistry to me.

The two products that I found that came closest to truly flavorless/tasteless were Unjury plain, which was a little like adding powdered milk to stuff, in texture, color, scent and ftaste, and ProCel, which really dissolved in anythiing and did not intrude on flavors. ProCel's disadvantage was that it took a lot of it to get in a big serving of protein....But it worked pretty well for me, cuz I would put a scoop (5 grams protein) in my tiny "meal" of soup or pudding or whatever and it stirred right in and all was well.

I also used the protein "shots" like Profect www.protica.com and Anywhey, which are NOT best quality protein supplements. They have a lot of collegen in them, which we do not absorb well. So if you should decide to use them, you need to be cognizant of the fact that you are not really absorbing the amount of protein listed on the label. AND you need to be committed to finding other ways to get in the protein.

Let me give you an idea of how to get in 100 grams of protein from just food in one day, considering the early-out belly. Eat these things at least one hour apart over the course of a day.

--1 egg prepared how you like it, 7 grams
--1 oz. cheese, 7 grams-
--1/2 c. Greek style yogurt, 10 grams
--2 oz. tuna made into salad your favorite way--14 grams
--3 strips bacon--12 grams
--another 1/2 c. Greek yogurt--10 grams
--3 oz. shrimp, cooked any way you like and nibbled over time--20 grams
--1 c. milk, 10 grams
--1/4 c. soy nuts, 10 grams

The total volume of this list, unchewed, is about 30 oz. You won't be able to do this when you come home from the hospital, but by three months out, chances are you'll be able to do it. If not, then you can make up the slack with whatever protein supplement is palatable to you.

I'm nearly four years out and here's my typical protein consumption in a day:

--6 oz. Greek yogurt 14 grams
--about 6 oz. cheese--40 grams
--5 strips bacon--15 grams
--3 Taco Bell tacos--30 grams
--piece of animal, 3-5 oz.--20-35 grams
--soy nuts, peanuts or almonds to nibble--10 grams or more

My minimum daily protein intake is 120 grams or so. I eat other stuff too :-). Lots of veggies and then other stuff as I see fit. Must eat the protein and take the supplements and drink the water. If there's room left over I eat what sounds good. Works great for me.

This is ;UNLESS.......see ;that word?.......you have an allergy or sensitivity to whey. THEN you should go to EGG BASED PROTEIN.

If allergic to EGG BASED PROTEIN, then you go to SOY.

Listen boy. Don't make me pull up your posting history on this and your other ID's. You do NOT want me to make a hobby of you. Quit acting stupid and ignorant. Nobody here has any patience left for this **** especially from you. Do your ******g research and go talk somebody into cutting you open for something before you get *gasp* fat.
