How do you do with melatonin?

I get good results with trazodone, which is an older antidepressant with a side effect of mega sleepiness.

In the past I have had a prescription for temazepam (restoril) it works good for me & with out the strang/weird/scarey side effects like Ambien does to me.
As for OTC, I use melatonin & 5-HTP-I got the 5 HTP from Puritan's Pride (you can get it in the nutrition section at your grocery store)
  • 5 HTP 200 mg.

5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in sending messages through the nervous system. Adults can take one capsule twice daily as needed or before bedtime.

Hope that helps!!!!

Have you tried a big ole bottle of wine???

Just kidding. Currently I'm taking Lunesta with pretty good results. I get about 5 good hours of sleep which helps me alot. With the Ambien I got to where I only got 3 hours. And with nothing I GET nothing.

Okay I wasn't totally kidding about the wine. Maybe a nice glass of red wine before bed would help to relax you enough to go to sleep.

I hear good things about this. It can be found at Vitamin Shoppe and your local health food store.

Goodluck, Darling!!

I know a lot of people who swear by valerian root.  It's natural and OTC.  You can find it most pharmacies.  You might look it up on Wikipedia and read about it and see if it's something you might be interested in.  I haven't tried it personally, but know at least 30 people who take it regularly with great results.

Valerian root is considered medicine in Germany and is frequently recommended as a calmer/sleep aid of first resort by doctors. Of course, herbal products are sold only in standardized formulations there--Germans take their Kraeuter seriously :-).

(Of course, there are lots of folks there who swear by using their herbs in tisanes. Those are not standardizable. But if it's in a tincture, oil, tablet, capsule etc., it's a standardized and trustworthy product.)

I suffered from insomnia for years, 10+. I tried the 5 htp, which didn't really help me, but it may work for some.  I never went the RX route, but I found within the last 2 years that melatonin is my ticket solid sleep.  I get mine from Swanson Vitamins.  Now, that I am a new mom, I don't seem to have the insomnia problem at this time. I still have my stash of melatonin though, just in case.
