I can't stand water! Help.

This surgery turns many of us into Mad Scientists!  My solution was herbal teas; different varieties at different temperatures.

I also havent been able to enjoy water post op plain. I have a few times added a lot of lime and or lemon and it has tasted ok. I used to love it but now its just so so but I cant do plain water at all. I dont like the after taste of crystal lite so have had a problem with that. I drink a ton of different kind of iced teas but i dont like them super cold.

Tough one...you are so early out...it will just have to be by trial and error.  Like Chad, I guzzled cold water pre-op, then it was soooo hard.  G2 (Gatorade product)  was the the only thing that I found even remotely palatable post-op...it was so 'ROUND".....I am sure you understand what that means.  I loved lemonade pre-op, then it was entirely too acidic for the first 6 months post-op.  Carbonation will mess you up, too ..... BURP!   It really is a YMMV thing.  Your tastes will change so much, then come full circle about 9 months out.  I know I am not really answering your questions, but just to let you know, you are not alone.  Good Luck!

I'm so with you on this!

I couldn't do water early out, and still don't like it.

If the lower sugar Gatorade doesn't cut it (G-2), try the regular - but cut it in half with water.

Other ideas:

SF Tang

Buy the lemon juice squeeze bottles in produce dept. Add to water, and if you want it sweeter, try equal, splenda, et****il you find one you can stand.

Since you are new, I'm not sure if you know, bu****ch out for any sugar alcohols - for example malitol, sorbitol, any that end in "ol". They sneak more into food than drinks, but they are RARELY tolerated well by DS'ers. Lots of gas!

I still struggle staying hydrated. For better or worse, soda is now fine on my system, but I try to stick to non dark ones like Fresca.
after another month or so goes by, IF ok with your medical team, you could try soda...but let it go almost flat to start with! Now that I think back, month 3 is when flat soda tasted soooo good to me!;
I also like coffee lattes - but I make them with half & half, less carbs than in skim milk. Crazy, right? I rarely drink milk any more. I'll use half & half cut with water instead.

Watch out for standard brown tea...some of us got oxylate kidney stones during our rapid weight loss phase. White or green teas are better. Per my urologist, brown tea is the #1 thing to cut out if kidney stones become an issue.

Good luck - and I hope that as your tastes change, your choices will open up.

No matter what, keep trying. You MUST avoid dehydration!

I couldn't drink water either.  Well, bottled or filtered water was ok, but bottled water is pretty pricey!  I bought a Filtrete water filtration system at WalMart for around $35 that is the cat's meow!  I filter my tap water into the very convenient travel bottles it comes with, and I'm good to go!  I throw them in my lunchbox, too!  As far as flavored water goes, try Propel powders to add in, also Ocean Spray makes powders now, too!  I love the White cran peach flavor!  Mmmm!  I also put part of a packet in with my hot tea at work to switch things up a little!  Really, as long as the fluid you're getting is caffeine free, you should be ok, so try different teas and SF juices....the possibilities are endless, really.  You just have to keep trying!

I agree - try different temps.  Ice cold works best for me...but for each person it is different.

Mio - is AWESOME!  You can give your water a tiny bit of flavor without the "aftertaste" of crystal light.

Add lemon or lime to water.

Try different flavored teas....sweetened with splenda or the like if you want.

Sugar free / lower sugar juices mixed with water.

Ocean Spray makes some sugar free drink mixes (similar to crystal light) that are awesome.

Broth worked very well when I was early out - it helped settle my tummy.

It is just recently that I've been able to drink straight ice water on a consistent basis without it hurting my tummy.  So it does get better!

Whatever you do, keep your intake up.  I get my blood drawn every single week, and my BUN is high because I won't drink enough water.

I am, at this moment, drinking cold water with a splash of lemon juice.  Pre-surgery, I could only do water at room temp.  Now, it has to be cool or cold.  Nice on the tummy!

I like the idea of different teas at different temps.  Try that.

Hang in there!

Before surgery I loved water.  Right after surgery water bothered me at any temperature.  The thing that saved me was I had a lot of fresh lemons on my tree.  I squeezed lemon into the water and this helped out alot.  I survived on this for several weeks.

I am actually suprised that I am loving water right now.    The colder the better for me as well.    But I would suggest maybe the Propel packets.   Some of them seem really strong now that I am out of surgery, so I use 1/2 a pack.   I bought some Diet Iced Tea....that was ok.   I also got Brisk Lemonade that's caffeine/sugar free.  I thought I would hate it but it's actually pretty good.

Vitamin Water Zero (or the Costco knockoff VitaRain), herbal tea, light lemonade, lemons squeezed in plain water, miso soup (though that is salty, too), Propel (I think it tastes a bit better than Crystal Light)
