Best foods for getting protein (aside from shakes)

Oh okay, that helps me tailor my response better :-).

Give some ready to drink protein supplements a try, too. Isopure makes a smoothie drink that I, who hate protein supplements, find downright palatable. They also make a clear, Gatorade-like beverage. So, too, does Designer Whey. Those are both drinkable, though I think the DW one has better flavor.

I ABHOR the other RTDs like Muscle Milk and EAS.

Early protein foods for me were egg drop soup, egg salad, sometimes scrambled egg (plain old eggs were iffy for quite some time), tuna salad, shrimp, scallops, soft white types of fish like tilapia or cod, the insides of a Taco Bell taco and some deli meats (mostly turkey and chicken).

Some people get a kick out of ricotta cheese with pasta sauce. I hate ricotta and cottage cheese both.

You already received great advice and ideas so I'll just chime in with this tidbit. Rule of thumb is 1 oz of meat (unprocessed) is about 7 grams protein. One little ounce doesn't sound like much now, but post op it will look like a mountain instead of a dollop! Try to think in those terms post op and it might help. Remember to read labels on anything you purchase and watch the carbs and sugars that may creep in and cause you gas pain. I bought some chicken salad and damn if it didn't have sweet relish in it...that has sugar... and did I ever pay for that early out. Now I can eat a ton of it with no problem, but early out it's a crap shoot. *ha! I like that pun*

Wow.  Lots of good info here.  Thanks for posting this question Beth! I revise from RNY to DS and was looking up protein tips.

I had some milk issues early out but that had cleared by about 4 months out. I ate cheese right from the begining.

One of my easy to eat go to foods is shrimp.   Easy, yummy, low carb and of good value.  (I buy the value packs, 2 pounds for $10

Lots of other great suggestions that i won't repeat, in other people's posts.

Hi Beth.
I drink a protein shake each morning and don't mind it a bit and I'm about 2.5 years post-op.  Some people like variety but for me, when it comes to shakes, I found one that I like and I don't change it up and I'm good with it. FYI I drink the pre-made Premier Nutrition shake in Chocolate from Costco. I hope you find one that you like because even though you don't have to drink your protein, it is nice to know that I started off each day with 30g and low carb.
So, back to your actual question.. :-)
I've always loved seafood but it was definitely appreciated even moreso after my revision! Seafood is high in protein and so easy to digest.(not to mention yummy!) Scallops, crablegs, tilapia and shrimp, lobster if you can afford it. :-)   And it is a bonus that it all tastes good drenched in butter!
