BPD-DS or DS
The BPD is also called the Scopinaro procedure. It's basically a large-pouch, very-distal RNY---they remove the lower 50% of the stoma*****LUDING the pylorus, and give a very long intestinal bypass. It worked very well, so far as losing weight went, but it caused some severe malabsorption issues, gas and bowel issues, as well as all the pouch/stoma complications of the RNY.
Working off the BPD, Dr. Hess developed the 'modern' DS back in 1988. He decided that making a gastric sleeve, rather than a pouch with a stoma, would solve a lot of the BPD's problems (and he was right.) Sort of out of respect for Scopinaro's work with the BPD, this new procedure was---quite ineptly---called the Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch. (BPD/DS.) Soon, that was shortened to just DS, because it was the Switch part that made the difference.
Now, many surgeons refer to this procedure as a VSG/DS, or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy with Duodenal Switch. Some talk about a sub-total gastrectomy with Duodenal Switch, and some use the term "Duodenal Switch" to refer to the whole procedure---which isn't technically correct EITHER, because surgeons in Europe have been doing just the 'switch' part---no gastrectomy---on non-obese diabetics for YEARS now.
Are you completely confused now? If not, I can go on...(*grin*)
Basically, unless there's some compelling reason to do otherwise, what you want is a VSG/DS.
