Price of Labs

I know that I got a labs done, but I wanted to be comprehensive.  Given how they turned out, I'm glad I did . . . and actually almost grateful at this point that there's more things to code for & less of a chance that the insurance company will not cover something.

IF they cover all of the tests run, I pay 20% coinsurance.  If they don't cover something, I get to pay for all of that test & still pay 20% coinsurance on what they do cover.

Drumroll, please .  .  .  my total lab bill being submitted to the insurance company is . . .

$6, 835

Holy (insert preference)!

Seriously ridiculous... but well worth it.  I had mine done this month and they were over $5,000... Thankfully my insurance has not balked at the labs every 3 months yet and has paid 100%.  Hope it goes well with yours.

Oh, jeez, I haven't seen my bill yet.  I'm terrified.  What happens if the doctor didn't code something right and insurance wants to balk, do I have any appeal rights?

I think most, if not all, dr offices will resubmit trying a different, yet appropriate code & will resubmit it.  In the end, though, I don't know if we have appeal rights.  I was wondering the same thing myself, actually.

Thank you for sharing...this is very, very useful information. A year of labs(quarterly) is more expensive than some of the self pay rates for the sugery itself. Makes that high premium , high deductible gov't hi-risk pool coverage seem down right thrifty.

Can I get a HALLELUJAH for insurance!  And I'm not even religious!

This is actually super good info to pass onto the pre-ops.  This needs to be added to that list of links.  Labs are fundamental in having a DS.  Yes insurance will cover most if not all of it but you NEED to be prepared in case they don't.  I've checked with my insurance and United Health Care Community says they will, we'll see what happens when the time comes to actually get it done!

Thank you for sharing!

Holy Crapola!  What makes labs so expensive?  My company changed to a high deductible plan this year so the first $1250 is out of my pocket and then the 20% coinsurance kicks in, with a max out of pocket of $3250/yr.  I have Aetna and I have no idea if they will cover labs every quarter.  I have to admit, this is a bit daunting.

I can't imagine how self-pays could handle this.  $20k per year just for labs is quite a chunk of moo-la.

Where are you getting them done?  When I went through my surgeon and they were done through the hospital, they were A LOT more expensive than having my PCP order them and going through labcorp.  It was a really big difference.  You might want to "shop around."

I thought of that, but then don't you have to pay for it & get reimbursed by insurance?
