Increasing fat is always what I try first.

I take two Fiber Choice every day.  It is a good-tasting chewable tablet and you can take up to six/day if needed.

I drank about 4 oz of pink grapefruit juice the other day and whoo**** worked like  a laxative for me. I would say it's a quick fix, not something to do every day. But I would 'greatly' increase my fat intake. Butter, mayo etc.

I find that when I don't have enough mayo or salad dressing etc. thru out the week, I tend to get constipated. Thus, the pink grapefruit juice fix. LOL.

I've always had a regular bowles, three maybe four times a day. Lots of fiber too move things along.

Eat jelly sweets and you'll **** like a broken hydrant.  I am quite partial to Percy Pigs but jelly babies work too.  It that fails eat a huge bowl of Haagen Das ice cream and wait for the after effect.

I WISH those things had that effect on me!  None of those sure fire "cures" for constipation work me!

I so feel your pain!!

This is what I have to do DAILY, consistently so that I can go.  And I am not consistent in the "going" department from day to day even when nothing has changed.  I can go from hard to pass stoll in the AM to dhr in the PM, all in the same damn day!!  When I was first out I was 2 poops in the AM and maybe one at night time.  Now I go whenever and am usually HAPPY to be going!

1.  2 doses miralax daily.  One with each protein shake.
2.  1/4 cup oil added to each protein shake (1/2 cup total daily)
3.  FULL FAT of everything.  I add in as much as I can get.
4.  Plenty of fluids
5.  I switched to the same calcium Julie takes
6.  I take Proferrin Forte for my iron b/c it is supposed to be less constipating
7.  800 mg magnesium glycinate w/each calcium dose (which is 16 of them daily, just as a reference for you).  This form of magnesium is supposed to be better absorbed by the body.  If you look at your mag ox bottle, it may not be ALL mag ox in that pill, it might also be mag citrate.  Which I think we also need, but it isn't what works for constipation.  Unless you are drinking the liquid form of it.
8.  4 stool softeners w/each calcium dose
9.  8 stool softeners at bed time
10.  Fiber - I am working on upping that...I am low carbing trying to get to goal.  So on top of being "bound" up b/c of the calcium I have that added to it.  B/c low carb diets CAN be constipating.

It is important to get this under some control b/c as a post WLS person you are at a greater risk of hemorrhoids and anal fissures...so you don't want to be straining or having hard to pass poop.  This issue sent me into the gastroenterologist.  He listened to me about my surgery and why I take so much of what I take and told me that what I am doing is appropriate and that it seems to be working "fairly" well since I AM able to go usually every day.  Which was a relief b/c I was assuming his head would explode when he saw that I took 2 doses of miralax and 28 stool softeners daily!!  And then informed me that I get to have a colonoscopy!  Yippee for me!

The one thing you do NOT want to do is start taking a stimulant laxative.  Over time that will "untrain" your system and it's muscles, thus making the whole deal worse.  Miralax and stool softeners are fine for long term us b/c they are NON stimulant.  Just a little PSA for you :)
