Do you ever eat cereal or a waffle?

I am over 2 months post op and I have a protien shake every morning for breakfast. FYI- I do not like eggs, and I also don't like meat for breakfast. (So my breakfast choices are quite limited) I am having no problem getting 100 gms of protien in a day, and I am starting to wonder if I could eat something a little different for breakfast once in a while. My carbs usually do not go above 40gms, and I know this would affect that. Just wondering if any of you eat things that aren't "low carb" sometimes... Isha 366/312/220-170 sw cw gw's

Hi there ! Yes, I must confess that I eat things that aren't low-carb at times. My Dr. cautioned me against dieting on top of the surgery, because he thought I was loosing a tad bit too fast, but I don't "diet". I don't not crave most carbs now, especially bread and rice. I have had a waffle for breakfast. I put some peanut butter on it for protien, plus it is really good to me. I will sometimes eat cereal with 2% milk as well. This morning I had 1/2 a bagel with cream cheese. Just be careful with your carbs! Do you like cottage cheese? If so, try this with some fruit. I even eat tuna fish with a few crackers in a pinch or grab a piece of leftover chicken. Just make sure you get something in for breakfast! Best wishes!

I havent tried cereal post op yet because I am still trying to overcome this carb freak mentality, but the nutritionist at my surgeon's office says it is ok to eat since we arent eating large portions. I would proabably try to stick to the Kashi Go Lean or some other cereal that has a higher protien content in it. Or if you can stomach the taste, add some extra protien powder to the milk before putting it on the cereal....that will boost it as well. Or add it to oatmeal or hot cereals as well...seems like you could disguise the powdery taste better in those.

Isha I am at goal so I eat cereal or carbs about every other day for breakfast. I do notice I am hungry about 11:00 when I do- actually hungry does not do it justice I am ravenous..... On the other days I eat whatever I could not finish from the night before at dinner-so I am eating meat but not the traditional breakfast ones. I really limited the carbs until I was at 75% of excess weight gone-so cereal was not an option for me early out. What about yogurt?- I used to love it with fresh strawberries this time of the year. Personally I could never of done the protein shakes- I wanted to eat and chew real food. I did do the protein bars and found them to be okay- I liked that most of them were very chewy and took me a while to finish. gratitude is my attitude Amanda S VG-DS October 2001 highest >350/342 start of wls journey/156@goal and after ps

Isha, I am the world's worst at eating too many carbs. I don't even track them anymore---I just concentrate on getting in 80-100g protein, 64 oz water, and all my supplements. For breakfast, mostly I eat sandwiches (using only 1 slice of bread) like a BLT or grilled cheese, or grilled ham, egg & cheese. Sometimes I have chicken or tuna salad or something leftover from dinner the night before. But I have eaten cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, pancake, bran muffin, etc. on occasion. I don't eat them often because baked goods and grains give me serious gas & diarrhea. -joanne s 277/167/150

Hi Isha On occasion I will eat carby things for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I buy 100% organic Whole grain pancake mix for my family. Very yummy and doesn't cause much gas if any at all. I also eat Monk's bread I believe its made by Peperidge Farm. They are smaller sizes slices of 100% whole wheat bread. Also 100% ww bagels made by Thomas's. I add cream cheese, LOTS of it. Or my absolute favorite, Ricotta chesse - 2 heaping spoonsfuls and a teaspoon of blackberry jam. MMMMMMM! I haven't tried waffles though pre-op I loved them. I steer clear of most bread products that aren't 100% ww because they do tend to cause gas, however everyone tolerates refined carbs or white flour differently. Oprah had a great show yesterday with lots of tips for people who wish to eat less refined carbs and more whole grains. She gave out personal receipes that I'm sure you could find on her website. Since you aren't limited in what you CAN eat, try a small a bite and if it doesn't sit well or you don't like the after effects, just don't eat it. After awhile of supplementing whole grains for refined carbs, you body won't crave the bad carbs anymore. Oprah said it takes 3 days, then you are in the clear! Breakfast is just like any other meal for me. This morning for instance, I ate a left over chicken leg and thigh from last night. And because my appetite is increasing, a few hours later I a few pieces of Genertal Tso's Chicken. Remember a great source of protein is dairy, so get creative. I'm sure if you googled cheese receipes, you'd find a bunch of new things to try. Good Luck! LeeAnn

I didn't start eating at all normally until 4-5 months post-op. Now, 2 years post op, I eat pretty normally. Indeed, I had a big bowl of cereal today. But salads and cereal and ice cream do give me gas. Actually, I'm shocked at how much I can eat without gaining after DS. I'm 215, started out at 382 pre-op.

I tend to eat "whatever" for breakfast, not limiting myself to breakfast foods. But if you want starchy stuff for breakfast and want to keep the carbs low, there are some pretty good products on the market; I myself have experienced virtually no exra gas or discomfort when using them: Controlled Carb Gourmet Bagels (no soy -- soy is not great for those of us who have thyroid issues) ... not a terrific bagel but high in protein, low in "bad carbs" Carbquick (cheapest at netrition) is the very low carb, no soy, version of Bisquick ... a really great buy and can be used as you would use Bisquick Bageltime.com makes a low carb version of bagels that you can order and they look great but if I want a bagel (I limit myself to 1 a week, usually spread as two halves over a two day period), my local bagel shop makes a soy version that's really quite amazing. There is a brand of muffins and pancake mixes called Carbtopia but I believe they're going out of business and are very hard to find. I placed an order with Lowcarbcutters.com for the items and they were only able to fill part of it. I have yet to try them but they too have no soy and mostly "healthy carbs" such as almond flour. Just be very careful with "bready" products -- especially since you're still early out. I find the suckers expand considerably in my belly, so I eat very very slowly or it can get very uncomfortable. When I do indulge, I eat the item with a lot of butter (best way to eat a more carby product as the fat helps our system eliminate it quicker and with less negative impact). God bless and good luck!

Hi Melissa, Thanks for the info about Carbquick. I've been looking for something just like this to replace bisquick. I just placed an order at Netrition.
