I start a new job 2 weeks post-op...maybe.

Hello everyone! I was hoping I could get some feedback about going to work post-op. I was just hired for a new job...and the same day I got my surgery date. Surgery is 6/14 (lap RNY). I was told by my Doctors staff that 2 weeks off should be ok if it's not a strenuous job. I haven't told my new employer about the surgery because I didn't know if it would jeopardize this opportunity. They expect me to start 7/3. Do you guys think it is realistic of me to expect to go to work that soon? Should I tell my boss I'm having the surgery or wait till after? Should I push back my start date? The job is as a lab technician and initially it will be a lot of sitting to be followed by some bending to draw blood in a month or so. Thanks for your input. MsSmiles

Your surgeon's office would be best to answer this question but I think I can say realistically that 2 weeks is a reasonable amt of time to return to work providing that there are NO complications. I was back to work in 3 days/2 weeks so it is realistice. Praying that you have a complication free surgery!

Don't be too concerned. I am a Veterinary Technician and went back to work 10 days post op. I didn't tell any of my co workers of my surgery and was just very careful and sensible about the physical labor. It was a little tough at first, a little sore and tired but I hung in there. Now I am 156 pounds lighter and all my co workers know and are so proud of me. You will do fine. Best of luck and blessings on your journey. Kirsten Lap RNY 3/16/05 300/144

I think you should be fine. I had a lap RNY and my doctor said take off 3 weeks, but I didn't have enough time but for 2. I did fine. I just made sure I got a nap after I got home in the afternoon and didn't plan to many things for a few weeks after work.
