I am 9.5 months post-op and my hair continues to thin. I take 2 Centrum Chewables a day, Biotin 4500 mg per day, ect,. I also get a minimum of 100 Grams of protein each day. I do not see an end to this problem. Any suggestions? What kind of vitamins do you take? Are you having the hair loss issues ?

It will get better. I take vista vitamins from bariatriceating.com. I am a year out and have stopped the major loss, I have about 3 inches of hair growing in all over my head! Looks funny at the roots! Oh well, I can cover it up! hugs, Tami

Depending on how fast your hair grows, the hair you are lossing now is most likely the result of a deficiency many months ago. And the vitamins you are taking now will not do anything to help hair that has already been damaged. Make sure you are getting in your protien and you should be fine. Soon all of the damaged hair will be gone and you will be dealing with the annoying undercoat of new healthy hair growing back in.

In addition to what others are saying, I would also encourage you to take a look at your water/clear fluid intake. Part of our hair loss is due to ketosis. The only way to get rid of ketones (the waste from excessive amounts of fat melting away) is to pee them out. The only way to pee them out is to drink a lot. That said, just keep doing what you're doing and drink lots of water each day. I am nearly 2 years out, and although I quit losing my hair, my hair texture itself has changed and I have gone from having super curly hair to just wavy hair once it started growing in and quit falling out so much. It's just one of those things... Hope this helps. Good luck to you! ~ Monica

Ketone production (ketosis) is just a byproduct of fat store being burned for energy and will not cause hair loss. Ketogenic acidosis WILL cause hair loss as this is a result of protien being broken down, but this is only a concern if you have a severe form of diabetes. These two completely different things are often conveniently confused by people who are pushing low fat/calorie diets to scare people away from low carb diets. BTW, I am not trying to bash (at all). This is a very common misconception (almost to the point of Urban Legend). For what it is worth, I tried low carbing a couple of times several years ago and lost around 60 lbs on one attempt. I always monitored my ketone output using Ketostrips (available at any drugstore), and over several months (almost 9 at one time) of being in ketosis I did not experience any hairloss.
