Question about BMI
I'm 27 years old and considering the Lap Band Surgery. I've known at least two people that have had it and swear it's the greatest thing they have ever done. The problem is, my BMI is just below what qualifies me to have my insurance cover the surgery. They say my BMI has to be at least 40 and I believe I am somewhere around 37. Did anyone who had the surgery go through the same thing? If so, what did you do to get around that and is there a way to get around it? I don't expect that my Dr. will lie for me and document the few extra pounds.
Doc can write supportive letters and indicate co morbids and life threatening need for surgery. You can gain weight, and you can recheck your height. Adjusting height 1 inch lower will increase your bmi. What height does your doc have you at? if he doesn't ,, then get your height to him so he can document your bmi according to your height.
Hope this helps. Don't give up, you are close. My bmi was just 40.
blessings, tami
Actually your BMI can be between 35 and 40 with a significant co-morbidity to qualify for weight loss surgery. However, some insurance companies have a minimum BMI requirement. You might be able to fight the insurance company since the National Institute for Health mandates stipulate the 35-40 BMI clause, however, it will be a battle. Good luck,
Julie
