I just read an article saying that gastric bypass patients cannot drink coffee, tea, milk, soft drinks and alcohol. I knew about soft drinks (minimal only) milk and alcohol, but coffee and tea? I've never heard of this. Have you? :angst:

Im 2 years out from the RNY and I have no problems drinking tea (not that I like it), coffee, milk, soft drinks and alcohol. I don't do as much or often though since Im personal training now Im cutting down on soft drinks which is helping me lose but I have no problems. I didn't, however, sip soft drinks and alcohol until months out..maybe that's where the confusion is.

I don't drink carbonated drinks at all, but I have cafe con leche (two) every morning. .... That is like latte, a shot of expresso and lots of warm milk. Coffee is a natural diuretic so if you drink it, keep a closer check on your daily fluid intake. I drank decaf coffee for the first 8 mos after WLS and then went to what I drink now. (Odd though, I don't like regular American coffee anymore.) Anyway, I think you will find a lot of post WLS'ers that drink coffee, tea, milk, soft drinks and alcohol. Have a blessed and sunny day. luvitunnyv

I drink expresso and cappachino ( have my own machine) decaf. I occasionaly have soda, and maybe two glasses (sips out of two glasses) a year of wine. I did not try soda till I was a year out. Milk is skim, Post op, you are told to stay away from caffeine period and soda due to carbination. I don't drink caffeine even now ,and as I said rarely soda and usually I let it sit awhile to decrease carbination. I don't want to mess with a good thing. Milk is a changes into a sugar so if you drink too much it could add excess weight. Good habits starte early will help you as you maintain later. blessings, Tami

Hi Trish! My manual says I can drink caffeinated coffee and tea a month after RNY, but limit it to 3-8oz cups per day. Alcohol in serious moderation after a year, and soda never (which probably means once in a while). The caffeine is an irritant to a new pouch, as is the carbonation in soda.

Everyone's surgeon and nutritionist are different in the way they do things. The best place to start with this question is your surgeon and learn what he expects. One of the things that gives gastric by pass a bad rap is the myth we can't eat good food or drinks anymore. That isn't true. My surgeon and nutritionist has never approved of soda. I think wether I had WLS or not....... cutting out soda was the best thing I could have done. I have never been a coffee drinker. I get jittery with too much caffeine so I limit it. I have also heard that it was a hunger stimulant. I have never drank alcohol anyway, so I don't miss it, but I can tell you Nyquil will knock me out.
