Insurance company has a no WLS rider. WHAT NOW?

I need help since my company supposedly has a rider that doesn't cover WLS. I'm with cigna in SWFL. Has anyone experience this before? I am so frustrated I could scream? Why is there so much discrimination against the morbidlky obese?

You should verify that for yourself. My girlfriend had CIGNA and had the surgery.

IT depends on the benefit plan your company put in for. If it has an exclusion for WLS, it's not the insurance co., it's your employer. Maybe you could s/w HR person to get it included in your benefit pkg for next year (?).. I'm sorry. Keep looking for answers/options

Hello friends - today I found out that my employeer is an exclusive provider organization and offers cigna ppo - in essence - my employeer has the last word about approving the procedure. Cigna is only an administrator for the plan. I am in the process of getting my medical neccesity letter from my pcp along with letters from my Endocronologist, and ENT. Wish me luck.....I know they say it's a journey - but nobody told me about these speed bumps in the road! Barbara Naples FL

Barbara, It sounds like you've got the right idea. I got letters from all of my doctors stating why wls was necessary from their point of view. This included my PCP, chiropractor, both orthopedic doctors (1 for my back & another for my knees/ankles), and my pulmonologist. I would have gotten 1 from my gyno but since I've had a hysto. fertility is no longer an issue for me so that problem is no longer a co-morbidity issue. Good luck! Vickie J.
