Risks of WLS
I was reading about the risks of wls,and it's pretty scary. I know there are risks you take with any surgery. Has anyone here had any serious illnesses or conditions after the wls? Remember, this is all new to me right now,and I am just learning about wls. Do you think the Lap-Band is the safest? Thanks
Donna
sure its scary... and you can even die.... but the benifits ( in my opnion) far out weigh the risks.... about lap-bad... its still surgery.... surgery is surgery..... depends on how much weight you have to lose and all that stuff..... i had my surgery 8 months ago..... i feel great.... i would do it aagian!!!
Yes there are risks, and yes deaths occasionally. Some people have had infections, some serious complications. As in any major surgery there are risks. I had to decide if the risks of not having the surgery outweighed the risks of having it. For me, having it was the better choice.
You need to choose a good competitent surgeon. I am thrilled with Dr Kim at celebration hospital.
REgarding lap band vs rny? Depends on how much weight to lose? Both are surgeries. Lap band has its share of difficulties. It is reversible. RNY makes you change eating habits. Check this site for more indepth info on both surgeries, go to the q&A or the main entrance.

Donna,
Yes it is risky & scary, but for me, the health problems I was already having & the risks of future health issues were MORE scary! I want to truly LIVE the rest of my life, not just be an observer so the surgery was the best option for me. Everyone must make this choice for his/herself. Only you & your docs know where you are, where you've been and where you're headed. Do lots of research, take your time & make the decision that is best for YOU!!
As for RNY vs. Lap - for me, RNY was the best choice b/c I had so much to lose & I know myself well enough to know that I need the permanent, long term restrictions to keep me on track!!
Good luck on your journey!

I had severe complications after surgery. Select your surgeon and the hospital very carefully. Do your research, ask about their after care and attend their support group meetings and find out what other pre-ops and post-ops think about their care. Dig, dig and dig.
You can research doctors and surgeons at myflorida.com.
Good luck!
