Hey all! So, I'm removing myself from soda, and trying to pick up a new habit, Protien shakes! I know that after the surgery, I'll need to have alot of protien so I'm trying to get used to it! Can anyone recommend some good ones to me? Also, are things that you buy at GNC (the cans with 35 of protien and 2 g of sugar) ok for us? Are they any good? How about other cans like slim fast or atkins. Are they ok, or do I need to find a powder supplement and mix it with water myself (if so, can someone suggest something frutti or non chocolate type)? I'm trying to get on a better track before hand so that I have less problems afterwards. Thanks ahead of time! Amy

I use Protine Delight, I love all the flavors. When I needed to get off the soda kick, and I was BAD about soda, I started Drinking Propel instead, and that has worked well for me. I will drink Propel all the time inbetween meals and protine shakes.

Amy, My surgeon didn't require protein shakes, so I've never done a lot of them. I have ordered the Fuzzy Navel Necture protein from BariatricEating.com. and I love it!! I drink it just for the taste! I also drink lots of Crystal Light. That is what I switched to when I detoxed off sodas (I drank tons of Diet Sierra Mist & Diet Sprite!!) I wouldn't buy a lot of any kind of protein yet. You'll find your tastes change after surgery and what you liked pre-op may not taste good to you any more. Also, Susan Maria at BariatricEating.com will send you free samples of protein drinks if you request them. Just go to the website and ask for them. Good luck! Amy, I would suggest you get use to the ultimate in bariatric beverages...water! Now about the protein shakes...the one I like best is Unjury. You can get it at Unjury.com. It has a great taste and it disolves really well. I haven't found a pre-mixed protein drink that I truly like although the Acheive One comes the closest. You are SOOOOOO good Amy, doing what you can to prepare youself. I can tell you're going to be a surgeon's dream...a compliant patient! You go girl! Rhonda

Its not that I listen well.. never have, ask my momma! However, I want SOOO badly for this to work, after everything else has failed. I'm terrified of being hungry (i get really wierd. Mood swings, headaches, nausea) and I don't want to be there. I want to know I can do it! I mean, it helps to have everyone behind me saying "you can do it" but I dont have much faith in myself (after all ther other diets have failed) so I want to do my best to make SURE I can! You guys here are all so wonderful, I don't know what I would have done thru this rollercoaster if not for you!

Amy, the biggest thing to remember about protein shakes is, they have calories also, so if you are drinking them, drink them as a meal, not as a snack. Sample protein drinks, don't go out and buy a big container because someone says they like this brand, you'll get stuck with a ton of protein drinks that way. GNC has a nice policy, if you don't like it, they'll take it back, that helps. Also what you like pre-op you may not like post-op, so don't stock up, buy it as you need it. I personally like Designer Whey products, powered mixes and protein bars. I use the Designer Whey chocolate powder with Carb countdown chocolate milk, it makes a good thick chocolate milk first thing in the morning. DEsigner Whey also has other flavorss besides chocolate. I guess the best advice I can give is sample as many as you can. Good luck, Steve

Try to order samples online before you invest a bunch of money. I have a high tolerance for protein shakes, but there are some that are downright disgusting! Also, what you may like today you may not like after surgery since our tastes changes and certain flavors taste better or worse afterwards. I spent WAY too much money on vitamins and protein shakes prior to surgery and wish I hadn't now. I just gave two huge containers of protein mix ($35 each) to a guy at work because I just cant even think about drinking them again. These days if I need a protein shake boost, I just get the pre-made EAS ones from the grocery store. I have also heard great things about some coffee flavored protein shakes from bariatriceating.com. FYI: I do highly recommend Power Crunch bars for a protein bar, they are more like a wafer cookie than bar-not too heavy and taste good. Good luck and if you come to Seaworld on 2/18, I can bring you some shake samples that I have.

Hi, you might not remember but I am not on the losing side yet either. I have been drinking protein shakes now for a few months, trying to get of the weight loss requirement of my insurance co. I like Body Fortress chocolate whey protein. It only has 4 carbs per shake. It is a 2 lb container and it is sold at walmart. It is only approx $12 a container, so fairly cheap compared to some. If you add a couple packs of artificial sweetner to it and mix it with water it is not bad.
