Well thats great/ So many people are denied any surgery at all. I still think if they cover band they should cover rny too. Double check to see if they have added other options.

Thank you I have already called thats how I know about Lapband being covered its kind of funny cause I had called them back in Feb. and they told that weight loss surgery was not covered. I did not even think about checking to see if the Lap band was not until the other day.Sometimes Im just not very smart

I am not familliar at all with Coventry. The best thing to do is call the 800# on the back of your card for the reqwuirements. Make sure you follow them and don't miss any appts. That will make you have to start the whole process over.

You are absolutely right, DS is not just for super high BMIs, but it is definitely one of the very best options for that group of people.  I just hate to see anyone "settle" for a procedure because the one that would serve them best is not available in their area. KWIM?

According to the UHC website, this is what is says...

The Bariatric Resource Services (BRS) benefit is being eliminated by the State Health Benefit effective January 1, 2012.  No new patients are being accepted into the program for the remainder of 2011.

All pre-surgery requirements and scheduled surgeries must be completed by December 31, 2011.  If the member has already  registered with BRS, they should contact their assigned BRS Nurse at 800-955-7976, ext. 72908 with any questions.  A BRS staff member will contact the member within 48 hrs.

Lap-Band adjustments:  If the member has had a previous lap-band surgery and develops complications requiring an adjustment, then the lap-band adjustment will be covered.

I haven't heard of any DS surgeons in the area retiring? That's news to me.

Also on a sidenote DS is not for just super overly obese.  Check out dsfacts.com for more clarification on this. :-)

I was required to do 6 consecutive months of supervised diet visits with my pcp or surgeon, nutritional counselling, psych clearance, and 6 consecutive months support group visits.

Other insurances do not require nearly as much.

I am curious why your insurance only covers the band? This is very unusual?  Most will cover band and rny.

Do you mind sharing your insurance and employer?
