Help please! What exercise do you do?

Okay so I was trying on some clothes today and my body looks so out of proportion.  I've never had a problem.  My weight was always distributed evenly and I never had problems buying clothes (other than the fact I'd have to shop in the big and tall every time).  I'm kinda freaking out because I don't want to look like a total freakshow.  I walk everyday for my exercise and I know that I should be lifting weights and other stuff but I can't afford to go to a gym and hire a personal trainer.  I have a weight set at home that is my brothers so I can use that but my problem is that I don't really know what to do to help all of my body get a work out.  So my question is, what are your exercise routines?  Any suggestions? I mean I couldn't get a man before because I was huge and now I feel I won't be able to have a relationship now because I look so weird.  My mom says it's in my head but I can see and I'm not blind.  Help!

Dude, my body is all sorts of a trainwreck between the stretch marks and the hanging skin. Trust me, it won't keep you from getting a man....

Having said that, I have an Nintendo Wii Fit that I love...also, at Costco, there is ball exercise kit that comes with bands and DVDs that's really cool for building core and strength training. I ended up buying myself an eliptical..I love that too.

Hey Jim, I couldn't tell from your profile how far out  you are from surgery but your body is morphing.

That's what we call the redistribution of everything during and even after weight loss. This is why plastic surgeons say not to even try to get plastic surgery done until you've maintained your weight for 12-18 months after you hit goal. It's not because you might gain it back but because your body will continue to redistribute what body fat you have left even after you've hit goal. It's also in the process of doing it as you are losing.

My partner has a degree in fitness and is my personal trainer. She says that it is not possible to spot reduce with exercise. That's a big fat myth. Exercise will build muscles which can push fat around a little but fat is reduced as it choses and moves around to redistribute according to just what your body wants to do. For example, my shoulders and chest are almost emaciated looking but my ass and hips are still huge (in my eyes) and my legs are just about right. I was really upset because you can see my ribs but all my fat is now on my ass and hips. I look lopsided. Everyone who is in my support group who has lost 120-300 pounds has said this is completey normal and that they all looked lopsided for a while. They are all at least 18 months out and look amazing, very proportionate, even without plastics.

I didn't like working with trainers and what I ended up doing was renting exercise dvds from Netflix, trying them out, taking the best suggestions and occasionally buying one when I found a workout I really liked.

There is one called Working Out with Weights for Dummies that I liked, although the instructor is a woman and maybe it's directed at women, I'm not sure.   But Netflix has other options - or Blockbuster or whatever your local video store is.    I've tried more than a dozen different yoga dvds this way (still haven't found one I like).

Weight/strength training doesn't reduce areas of fat but building muscle helps you burn more fat, makes you feel better about yourself as you start to see muscle tone and makes you fitter.

if you are looking for help with lifting weights, i would go to bodybuilding.com
they have a nice site. they tell you what exercises are good for which body parts and there are even videos of the exercise to show you how to do it. just start slow.  lifting won't tighten up the skin but it will tone and build muscle, which is a great thing

We joined the YMCA for $35/month. Sign on was free because of where we work. Also free is a consult every 12 weeks with a trainer. Then you workout alone/ with your buddy. So that might be an option is there is one in your area.

I like the home DVD thing too. Also good info if you google New Rules for Lifting.

I ordered New Rules for Lifting and it came today. I'm very excited to get home and look at it. :)

Thank you so much for recommending it Nean.
