My husband is stationed here in Baumholder. We've been here since November. Can someone tell me how I get a referral? What portion of the cost does Tricare pay for? I would appreciate any advice or suggestions, etc.

Hello, You have to get your referral from your PCM. Finding a PCM that is understanding and doesn't look down on WLS was the biggest challenge for me. There is a piece of paper your PCM has to fill out for Tricare and then Tricare processes it and sets you up with a consult appt. with a surgeon. The only surgery that Tricare covers is RNY and they will pay ALL of it. Personaly I would recomend Professor Rudolf Weiner in Frankfurt, he is the #3 surgeon in the world for this surgery and had pioneered many of the techniqes used all over the world including the U.S., it may be a bit far for you to drive but you can be assured that he is well worth it, and the hospital he practices out of is top-notch. If you have anymore questions about what Tricare requires or my experiences or anything feel free to ask me any questions you like. I just had my surgery on the 4th so I am still learning too. You can email me at [email protected] or find me on Yahoo! messenger with the i.d. sweetums272000. Sincerely, Hope

Hope, Do I have to provide my PCM with the piece of paper Tricare needs? I do want Dr. Weiner, so do I have to specify that to my PCM or Tricare? I have an appointment on Monday for my postpartum checkup and I want to try to get the ball rolling on Monday. Thanks for you advice and how are you holding up after your prcedure? Sarah

You shouldn't have to provide the paper yourself, the only reason I had to do that was because my PCP lied and said they didn't authorize the surgery in Germany and when I did some investigating Tricare informed me it was some bull and gave me the paper. I would specify that you want Professor Weiner, and if need be specify that to Tricare as well. If you have evidence of your failed diet history that helps and also if you have co-morbs and if you don't have any co-morbs you need to be at least 200% over your ideal body weight, i.e. BMI of 40 or higher. If you have any more questions go ahead and email me at [email protected], I am happy to help you in any way that I can.
