Thank you Jennifer for your words of encouragement. I truly appreciate them. I will be seeing my doctor in two weeks, mostly for my A1C and thyroid check-up but I am going to mention the surgery to him at that time. My husband has just been informed that our health insurance will be changing the first of July as well, so again, this could be a deterant or a help, depending on their policies, we'll just have to wait and see about all that though. But you are right, home schooling was a huge step to take, especially since my family wasn't too supportive of it, but they have since come around and ask lots of questions when they see us, so hopefully surgery will be much the same. Take care, Laura in Lincoln

Don't be afraid of talking to your family doctor. He should be concerned enough about your weight (depending on what it is) and all the horrible things that obesity can do to a person to help find a way to heal yourself. My mom is terrified of her doctors and I keep telling her, "Doctors work for you. They are your employees. If you don't like them fire them." Find a doc who cares about you as aperson and not as a billing source. Or a least find one who will listen to you. Your family doc should be a great help to you in this matter. And they need to be well informed about surgeries and you need to be informed as well. As a homeschool mom you know the value of being informed about controversial things, add WLS to the list. Get your hands on info and read everything, good and bad. Ask questions and talk to others. Tell your doc your concerns and hopes. He might be the best source of hlep you'll have. If he's (or she's) not a help find someone else who will be a help. Look into everything and once you've made a descision stick by your guns. Do this for you and your health. You homeschool and that was a big descison WLS is not very different. Just know what you are getting into. Good Luck.

Hi, my name is Laura. Homeschool mom in NE. Looking to have lapband surgery, but have not informed my family doctor yet; I'm afraid of his reaction. I am married with 4 children, 2 are grown and gone, 2 at home; 12 and 3, and I have 1 grand-daughter and another grand child on the way. Congratulations on your surgery and weight loss thus far, I hope that I will be able to post the same someday soon. Blessings!

No advice, but I am going through the same thing with my 11yo dd and my 9yo son. Actually, it's my son who is more self concious than my daughter. I am trying phase out the junk food slowly, and we eat way more salads and stuff. Anyway, no advice, but I thought I would let you know that you are not alone in this problem! Diana

Hello ladies, I too am new to OH and it was nice to see this board available. I have 4 children, two are grown and on their own and then I have a 12 yo son and a 3 yo daughter. We hs year round and since I am just in the research stage of wls, it hasn't affected us at all, yet.... I am hoping for the lapband but I guess that is a bit premature as I don't even have a doctor picked out, I am at a loss as to where to start and was hoping to find some others that could point me in the right direction. I'll check back often. Laura in Lincoln

Well sugery has gone great and I am very pleased with my results. I am nearly 40 lbs down and feeling great. However changes are afoot for my dd 10 year old. She is becoming increasingly aware of her own weight problem. She weighs herself on my scale and bemoans the fact that her clothes are too tight. While all that is solidly based on reality I'm concerend about her emotional impact of this at 10. She is beginning to put on the weight just about the same time I did. I think this is due to us not being an active family because I am not active. I've told her that while she may have a propensity to gain weight because of genetics that because mommy is going to be able to be active now that she will be able to get out more as well. That in itself should help control her weight. She is quickly hitting puberty. Developing hips and breasts and pubic hair. I'm sure her period is soon to follow. This could just be pre-puberty getting to her or it could be all the hoopla surrounding me and surgery. Anyone share any good advice about this?

Hello Jennifer! I am hoping to have surgery after the end of May, so I can have the summer to recoup and not have it conflict with schooling. My son will be 7 in July, and starting 3rd grade curriculum in the Fall, so I hope to be complication free and ready to jump into a new school year! I'm doing this for my kids, as much for myself. I am not a good example when it comes to eating and exercise...I want my kids to be fit and healthy! I just found this board...I hope more join in. ~Elizabeth
