Hi Ann. I was told to wait 2 weeks, (I had Lap RNY), before doing any exercise other than easy walking, and to wait 6 weeks before any serious AB work. Since I ride Western, I couldn't lift my saddle for 4-6 weeks. But I did climb on my horses and ride them bareback at 2-3 weeks with no problems. Best of luck to you. Life after surgery and weight loss is so good! My horse has been so responsive to me! I noticed a huge change in just 30-40 pounds, but since losing 165 my riding has taken on a whole new dimension. May the horse be with you! Ruthanne

I had surgery on 9/21/04. I was told by my Dr. that I could ride safely after 3 weeks. I actually waited a couple of more weeks because I wanted to lose more weight. The first time I rode again I had lost about 30 pounds and it felt so much better. My balance had improved already. I have lost 57 pounds now and things are really starting to work for me and my horse. He really appreciates what I did for him!!! I do a lot of strenuous riding because I live in the Sierra's. I did not ride him for over 6 months because I was just to heavy and it was hard on him. I am looking forward to riding in the spring and should almost be at goal weight (135) by then I hope. Have fun riding again. You will be so happy.

Hey Janice! My brother-in-law used to have a mule that was gaited, he was seal brown too, very protective of his pasture and the mare he shared it with--when she had her last foal, had some problems as the baby was huge but stillborn. Ramses (the mule), kept the dogs and coyotes away til we got there, and then politely let us do our job. My brother-in-law just didn't have time to ride him, but enjoyed him immensely! We sold our last 2 horses in June, at the time we realized we hadn't ridden them in nearly a year. My mare went to Georgia to live with a 12 year old girl who thinks she's the best thing God ever put on this earth. My hubby's horse staye local, going to work as a turnback horse at one of the local cutting horse facilities. We have 2 daughters, both freshmen in highschool (one is my daughter that DH adopted and the other is my youngest "bonus" daughter-I detest the word "step") they are 2 months apart. We figure when they graduate from highschool we'll get some more horses. This the first time in over 30 years that no one in our family has had a horse. It's pretty strange, but I sure don't miss having to feed in the winter time! Your balance will come back with the weight loss, but your center will be in a whole different place. If you're like the rest of us, you put the weight on gradually enough that you could adjust your balance as you gained. You'll lose the weight a whole lot faster and it will be harder to get your balance, just stick with it! Monica

Hi Monica, My friend must have been having one of her bad days or something, I havent been as close as I was before, I think she may have sensed that there was a little tension and thought about her criticism and possibly regrets what she said before. I saw her over the Holidays and we had a good time, and she even gave my daughter a compliment (I was shocked), I shouldnt take it to heart too much, she is one of those complainers, but dang it, sometimes it is tiring listening to the negitivity all the time. That is so cool riding the polo ponies, I have always wanted, when I was younger, to work with horses, whether it be on a ranch or even what my daughter is doing. She loves it and thats all that matters. Her dream is to work with horses at a ranch or work for a equine vet. Jeannie

Hi Lori, Hope your surgery went well. I want to lose some more weight before I ride, because of balance, and it just depends on how overweight you are. I was two hundred lbs overweight and still need another hundred to go, so it is all up to the individual. Jeannie

Hi Janice, I have never rode a mule before, but I'm sure she will work out just fine. Has anyone else ridden her? I bet she is really pretty. Jeannie

Ann, I rode the week after my surgery...just bareback down to open the gate to let our cattle in every night. Granted, this is my Arab show mare and she has impeccable manners and is very well trained. (I ride her bridleless and bareback normally to do this chore, lol) We didn't start full training again until last Monday...I was 4 weeks out and not in any pain. I just try not to let myself get too tired. I think my mare was enjoying her holiday...DH did the gate chore with her the week of my surgery but other than that she didn't get ridden. You know your body and your horse better than anyone...if you feel safe and your doctor agrees I say "go for it!!" Good luck with your surgery! Lori

Hi ! I am scheduled to have Lap Band surgery on January 10 in Boston, MA. As a horse owner and rider, one of the reasons for this surgery , how soon is it to ride again. I not talking full training, but walk maybe for 10-15 minutes, trot, etc. thanks.
