I think your daughter is exactly right--she's jealous and it sounds like apart from lessons, your daughter has a natural ability that's only been enhanced by lessons. If she was riding in a dressage or western pleasure class and your friend wanted to give some "constructive criticism" , that would be the time and place, evidently she's doing something right if she's getting paid. One of my friends and I got paid to ride Polo ponies on the weekends and after school--no right way to ride them either exept at the request of the owner to ride at a full out gallop for 15 minutes and a lope for another 15 minutes, we got paid $10/horse, it was easy money. Did I ride with my hands in the same place I would have if I'd been in the show ring, not no, but Hell No! Two totally different things. Confrontation is never easy and it's best done with a witness and done gently, your friend may not realize she's critical as she is. Monica

Topic: RE: Finally...Finding my confidence
I know you posted this several months ago but...I've not been on the board in a while either. I too experienced a completely alien feeling of fear of riding--I have never been afraid to ride in my life. I always wanted the most spirited horse of the bunch. The first time I got back on my horse, I was ok, a little apprehensive but ok and then it went down hill from there. Nothing happened, just all in my head. I think the balance thing has a lot to do with it. Our center is no longer where it used to be and if you're like me, you got used to riding while you were bigger. We gained the weight gradually enough that we adjusted as we went along, but it came off a whole lot quicker, so no adjustment period. We no longer have our horses, when the 4th of July rolled around, we realized that neither one of us had ridden but maybe 3 times since the last 4th of July, so we found great homes for both of horses--mine went to an enthusiastic 12 year old girl in Georgia, which is right up my mare's alley--she loves kids. My husband's horse stayed closer to home but now has a full time job at one of the local cutting horse facilities. Both of our daughters started highschool this fall, so we really weren't going to have time to ride. We train enough for other people that we've always got horse to ride if we want, but we've even cut that down to a bare minimum right now. I hope you keep on riding and start enjoying it more and more! Monica Burchett Tioga, TX Riding since I was 2

Nobody with any sense would criticize someone else's kid's horsemanship. Heck, your 12 year old is getting PAID to do what she loves the most! Most of us spend most of our lives trying to make THAT happen! Follow your daugher's advise and ignore them. I guess we all know people like that. Sounds like your daughter's a smart girl! Congratulations! Jill

*****es all the time about how someone is riding? How thier hands are placed? How you are now holding or neck reining right? or how you are probably learning that from someone else. My daughter rides at a local horse auction & gets paid to ride other horses in the arena, if she were riding sooooo badly , do you think that they would let her ride them? My so called friend, always has to ***** and let me know about how my 12 yr old is riding. I get so freaking sick of hearing it. My daughter had lessons at a riding academy and rides well, her grandaughters ride as though they have chicken wings and does not comment on them, on how they are badly riding. Would you just ignore her & continue to remain silent or would you confront her? My daughter says to ignore her, she is just jealous that her grandaughters dont ride at the auction. Jeannie

By a longshot, and after a lifetime (gulp almost 38 yrs) of dealing with horses, I would have to say quarter horses are my favorite, and not the 440's either the foundations. That being said I used to train and show Arabians in Scottsdale in the 1980's when they were at their zenith as far as prices went anyhow. Although at the time I was eager to get on any out of control mount there was, and into riding the "unrideable", the arabs of today are much different than they were breeding in those days, and I hit the ground a little harder, and don't bounce back up like a ball. So I am glad I had all the experiences that I had, but give me my quarters, or even grade horses. Never was into certain colors, and mine generally tend to be chesnuts, sorrels and the like with VERY minimal white or "chrome" as it is called in the industry.

Hi Jeannie I've actually been thinking about this lately, as I am in the process of finding my next horse. And, as I've been considering, I've realized that I don't really care what breed I end up with, as long as it's a safe, sound and sane horse. Attractive would be nice, but definately not a necessary feature. (The warmblood mare I'm parting with is drop-dead gorgeous, but too much horse for me now. She needs a much more confident rider that I am these days.) I tried out a thoroughbred mare a couple of weeks ago who had all of my wanted qualities. Unfortunately, her trot, while beautiful to watch, was going to shake my teeth out. Fine for shorter rides in the show ring, but I also love trail riding and want to hunt. So on to my next test drive, last night, on an enormous appendix quarterhorse. Comfortable gaits, and quiet enough to be a school horse. Not what you'd call a looker, but I felt safe on him. And once I feel safe, riding becomes fun again. So, the short answer, my favorite kind of horse is the kind that let's me feel safe and have fun. Hopefully, I've found my guy. A few weeks will tell. Have a great weekend, Deb
