Gaining Weight?? WTF??

Alright, I can't seem to figure this out!

The more I pay attention to what I eat/the healthier I eat the more weight I gain...
Yet the crappier I eat the more weight I lose.

I'm not talking 1 or 2 lbs either...let me explain

I recently moved to NYC. So with all of the walking around I do here I started losing weight/noticing that I'm a bit more toned. With all those extra calories being burned I started eating crappy foods (high fat/ high sugar). I'm almost 2 years post-op and I can eat a lot of "regular foods" so it didn't phase me. Without even trying I lost 8 lbs. I was so happy then I had a bad case of gastritis that landed me in the ER. Being afraid that it was the cause of the foods I had been eating I switched back to healthy things (protein shakes, portioned meals, fiber rich snacks, low fat foods, etc.) Since I've done this in the course of 3 weeks I've gained back 8 lbs. I know some of it is water weight because I do have the tendency to dehydrate EXTREMELY easy now but 8 lbs worth?? this is crazy.

I don't know what to do other than hit the gym and OD on water. This is seriously ridiculous. Anyone have any helpful advice or a similar tale?

Perhaps the 8 lb gain is just your body adjusting back to the place it was most comfortable. Were you at your goal weight before the 8 lb loss/move to NYC? Or were you still trying to lose more?

I am still trying to lose more. I'm in the comfortable weight range right now...well not so much since I gained some back.

Are you tracking your food? Are you staying in a specific caloric range? Even eating too much healthy food will cause weight gain. Are you exercising? If you decreased your activity level and continued to eat the same amount, the weight will come back on. Many low fat foods have more sugar and/or sodium added to them. Crappy foods are not worth eating. No nutritional value at all. Glad that you are eating healthier. Even protein shakes will put weight on you, if you go over your caloric range that your body needs.

After extreme fluid loss and you replace your fluids, your weight will go up, because the weight lost, is water and not fat.

My caloric intake range is supposed to be at 2300kcal/day. I'm lucky if I even reach 1100/kcal. I don't go out of my way to exercise, I just walk everywhere. That's just a standard in Manhattan. I am aware of what I am eating and I feel like that is the problem. The only protein shakes I drink are muscle milk LIGHT. 7g of sugar/150 kcals.

Did you get any IV's in the hospital?  If so, possibly that is the culprit.

Yes, I had an IV bag and my meds administered that way too.

Why does it do that?

Not sure.  Perhaps because it is saline.  That has happened to me consistently over the years, especially before surgery.

Don't worry too much about it......things will work out just fine.

Enjoy New York.  It's a very special place.
