Hi Steven! I am off on vacation and can not sleep to save my life! I just found this message board! Hello back! I have my surgery December 4th. My Dr says I may be able to go back to karate in January. I can not wait! I am excited to see what I can do with these weight restrictions gone. I am hoping that I will not be such a sitting duck when I spar! LOL!! I am a purple belt in the Kishendo system. I really like the bo staff and nunchacu (sp?). I also am a kata junkie! Love it! Have a great Turkey day! ~Jennifer

Hi Steven! I spelled it wrong. It is Kishindo. It is a Okinawan based mixture of Akido, Judo, and some others I can't remember. My Sensi is the Co-founder of the acadamy/system. He is a 6th degree. I have not returned to class yet. I am only now getting enough energy back to live my life, take care of my family and house... Hopefully next month. Kata makes me soooo happy!!! I am uptight until I learn it and have it memorized and then when I do it it gives me a rush. Good luck with the insurance approval... ~Jennifer

Hi! I am new here. I had my surgery on March 28, 2003 and I have lost about 95 pounds so far. I started doing Shorei Goju Karate in September and I am TOTALLY addicted. I study everyday, I have classes 4 days a week. I am actually going to test for my yellow belt tonight. I am very excited, but nervous!! I hope I get to know a lot of people here! Laura

I did get my yellow belt. I was really nervous. I was testing by myself with the head sensei. I did good though. Now I have to take 2 weeks off of Karate. I had varicose veins removed from my right leg last Thursday, so I can't do any kind of exercise for 2 weeks. It is killing me. I LOVE karate. I usually take about 8 hours of classes a week. What discipline of Martial Arts do you study? I am thinking of adding Aikido or something to my study. ~Laura

what did you have to do during your promotional? adding another would be cool. if you wanted to add aikido to your studies then i would suggest to go after jujitsu ( which aikido is from ). i was taking that before switching to karate-do and had a blast in it. i stopped because i was getting to heavy to do the moves correctly but once i have the surgery, if i get approved , i have every intention of picking it back up and adding it to my karate studies.

To be promoted to yellow belt, I had to learn two new katas, then I had to know my history of Karate, sensei history, and the story of Master Oyama. I am also working with an advanced Karate group just so I can be on their demo team ( they travel to different areas and give Karate demonstrations) so I am learning like 5 new katas and learning a kata with a bo staff. It is a lot of work, but so much fun. I am learning sparring, but I am not that good at it. I need a lot more practice. I learned a little about grappling on Friday night and that seemed like fun. How is your struggle with your insurance company going to get your surgery??

Hello, I had checked this forum a month or so back and there were no postings in it at that time, but good to see now that there are some people here now. I am almost 1 year post op and started studying Tai Chi around my six month mark of being post op. I really enjoy Tai Chi particualry with the school that I am invovled with. I presently live in Scotland and have to travel about 1-1.5 hours each way to get to class, but it is worth it because of the instructor. I did a lot of research about different disciplines prior to choosing Tai Chi and than I researched different schools. what i seemed to find over and over here in this area is that most of the Tai Chi instructors were running classes that focused on the health aspect of Tai Chi and that was it. If anyone knows anything about Tai Chi, they will know that the health aspect is maybe one half of the discipline. There is the applications, the maritial arts side, and the self defense part. None of the schools in a one hour radius of where I live teach any of that except this one. so that is why I go there. You need the entire discipline if you want to really understand the art of Tai Chi, but no one around here seems to understand that. They just see it as a gentle form of exericse that is slow and good for older people and injured folks. Well, done in that manner it is not really a martial art. The instructor that I have originally started in Tae Kwon Do before moving into Tai Chi and becoming an instructor. he also teaches Kung Fu. Which I hope to add here soon and start with that too along with my Tai Chi. I really enjoy the Tai Chi, the sword forms, the grace yet power that it entails if done correctly. Tai Chi is a gentle form of mutiation. haha, that appeals to both the lady and the tough chick in me. Melisa Morrison Success is the best revenge!
