Ok, I am SOOOOOOO frustrated at my sparring! I totally got my assed kicked last night. It seems like no matter how hard I try I just suck at it. I wish I had a way to practice at home. I want to be really good at it. I want to be the best in my belt ( at my class of course). I think my sensei's are thinking I am a complete idiot and not worth the time. All the sensei's came over to spar with me after they saw my frustration, but of course it is easy for them to get me. I usually end up sparring with the same guy because he is the only other one in my belt. He is about 6'4" abd about 220 pounds. I am 5'9" and 200 pounds, so we are pretty close. He is so quick that I can't get ANY strikes or kicks in. What do I do????? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I even had nightmares about it last night! Thanks! Laura

Hi Laura! I go on the offensive. Be the aggressor. Plow in and make them have to back off. Also I am working on combinations. 3-4 moves at a time. Get in, attack, and get out. That is my best advise. I am working on stamina so I can keep it up. Good luck! ~Jennifer

what i do is fight ( spar ) on my own terms. i do not fight the others fight. while they are bopping all around the ring i bop along or just walk to them. i wait till they get themselves in the corner and before they can move out i block them in. remember to feint. the feint must be believable though. say you feint with a hammer fist with the intention of doing a side kick, the hammer punch must be believabe in that if opportunity shows you strike with the hammer strike. fient with 3 or 4 " missed " kicks and then strike on the 5th. do not worry about scoring. just fight. steven

Being a taller guy I can tell you that the best way to fight a taller person is to get inside of them. Take away their kick and reach advantage. Once inside you will find more target opportunities than you would on a shortly or smaller individual. I definately agree with you need to fight your own fight and not theirs. Get inside and stay there. If they try to retreat stay in on them and keep working them.

Hi Laura; When I first started Tae Kwon Do, my instructor kept putting me with the men and higher ranks when I sparred. Finally after getting the crap kicked out of me several times, I asked him why he did this? He told me that the greatest part of learning is when you experience defeat. The upper ranks can teach you valuable information by doing it and seeing it first hand. Maybe the next time you have sparring night at your school you request that you spar the higher ranks. When you spar them, make it clear that you are trying to learn from them, not to kick their butt, and you will find that they will tell you little secrets to sparring that help out a great deal. A lot of times I found they would tell me what I did wrong and what I need to do to improve my sparring techniques. My biggest personal tip to you is be patient. Let the other person tire themselves out first and you'll find you will last longer and look more like a Black Belt in tournaments. I hope I was of some help. Kelly Anderson 1st Degree Black Belt

I CAN RELATE WITH YOU ,IM PRACTICING JUI-JITSU AND WHEN I GET ON THE MAT I GET THOSE BUTTERFLIES ,BUT THE MORE I GO OUT I GET BETTER AND I DONT GET AS SCARED AS I WAS THE FIRST TIME. ANOTHER IDEA IS ASK YOUR SENSEIS TO WATCH YOU WHILE YOU SPARR AND ASK THEM TO CRITIQUE YOUR PERFORMANCE .THATS WHAT I DO AND TRY NOT TO LOOK FOR COMPLIMENTS CAUSE COMPLIMENTS WONT HELP YOU IN THE STREETS. KEEP FIGHTIN' BY THE WAY IM WHITE BELT 5 MONTHS
