Topic: RE: resume training after surgery
I actually never took up any martial arts until after my surgery. My surgeon only had on stiupluation, absolutely no punches to the abdomen. I am almost one year post op and am considering adding even more. some Kung Fu. we don't genereally have much punches to the stomach in that but I suppose one could happen. but I feel pretty safe with it being a year post op. since I haven't started will ask my surgeon before though. I suppose it is a bit different with me since I never did any martial arts prior to my surgery. Had I had any training and conditioning prior, I might have been able to start sooner. I started around 6 months post op because that was when I had lowered my weight sufficiently that I felt able to start training.

Topic: RE: I need to talk about sparring!!!!
what i do is fight ( spar ) on my own terms. i do not fight the others fight. while they are bopping all around the ring i bop along or just walk to them. i wait till they get themselves in the corner and before they can move out i block them in. remember to feint. the feint must be believable though. say you feint with a hammer fist with the intention of doing a side kick, the hammer punch must be believabe in that if opportunity shows you strike with the hammer strike. fient with 3 or 4 " missed " kicks and then strike on the 5th. do not worry about scoring. just fight.

Hi Laura!
I go on the offensive. Be the aggressor. Plow in and make them have to back off. Also I am working on combinations. 3-4 moves at a time. Get in, attack, and get out. That is my best advise. I am working on stamina so I can keep it up. Good luck!

Topic: I need to talk about sparring!!!!
Ok, I am SOOOOOOO frustrated at my sparring! I totally got my assed kicked last night. It seems like no matter how hard I try I just suck at it. I wish I had a way to practice at home. I want to be really good at it. I want to be the best in my belt ( at my class of course). I think my sensei's are thinking I am a complete idiot and not worth the time. All the sensei's came over to spar with me after they saw my frustration, but of course it is easy for them to get me. I usually end up sparring with the same guy because he is the only other one in my belt. He is about 6'4" abd about 220 pounds. I am 5'9" and 200 pounds, so we are pretty close. He is so quick that I can't get ANY strikes or kicks in. What do I do????? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I even had nightmares about it last night!
Thanks!

Topic: RE: hello?
To be promoted to yellow belt, I had to learn two new katas, then I had to know my history of Karate, sensei history, and the story of Master Oyama. I am also working with an advanced Karate group just so I can be on their demo team ( they travel to different areas and give Karate demonstrations) so I am learning like 5 new katas and learning a kata with a bo staff. It is a lot of work, but so much fun. I am learning sparring, but I am not that good at it. I need a lot more practice. I learned a little about grappling on Friday night and that seemed like fun. How is your struggle with your insurance company going to get your surgery??
Topic: RE: hello?
what did you have to do during your promotional? adding another would be cool. if you wanted to add aikido to your studies then i would suggest to go after jujitsu ( which aikido is from ). i was taking that before switching to karate-do and had a blast in it. i stopped because i was getting to heavy to do the moves correctly but once i have the surgery, if i get approved , i have every intention of picking it back up and adding it to my karate studies.

Have any of you found good places to buy martial arts supplies from? I have only found a few like tigerstrike.com.
Thanks!

I hear you!! I love doing Karate. Since I got into it, it pretty much consumes me. I like doing Katas, but I really love doing weapons. I just started with the Bo staff, and I will hopefully be learning the sai's soon. They are just too cool!!!

I did get my yellow belt. I was really nervous. I was testing by myself with the head sensei. I did good though. Now I have to take 2 weeks off of Karate. I had varicose veins removed from my right leg last Thursday, so I can't do any kind of exercise for 2 weeks. It is killing me. I LOVE karate. I usually take about 8 hours of classes a week. What discipline of Martial Arts do you study? I am thinking of adding Aikido or something to my study.
