Hello Lisa,
I would say If your loking to do TKD and have a couple of places that you're looking into You should see if they have an intrductory program. And see if you like it. You'll need to find out if they require you to attend a minimu amount of classes or is it unlimited. You might go there and decide that TKD isn't for you. Look in your phone book and see what other arts are offered in your area.
As for the workinh out as a post op I started training in Kenpo when I was 534lbs. By the time my surgery rolled around I was a green belt. I went back to training 6 weeks after my surgery taking it easy and I'm on track to test for my Black belt in July.
I would say that if you like the school and like their philosophy then that is where you should be.
P.S expect to pay in the $75-$120 a month range.

I am looking into starting Tae Kwon Do with my sister-in-law after the holidays and I've found 2 potential schools that I want to check out.
My questions are:
1. What is the average cost of attending a Tae Kwon Do or Karate school? I took Judo at a small school and it was really cheap ($5 a class). But it seems like these bigger schools are a bit more $$.
2. Did you have any problems working out in martial arts as a post-op?
Thanks so much in advance! I'm off to do some last minute x-mas shopping, so I'll check my responses when I get home!
Topic: RE: MY DISCIPLNE IS JAPANESE JUI JITSU
Currently studying Budo Taijutsu (Ninjutsu) and Jujitsu and aiki-jujitsu play a big part of the study. Happy I have been given the ok to return.
Topic: RE: ARE THERE ANY SHODANS HERE OR HIGHER RANK?
Hey,
I hold a shodan in Shotokan Karate and working toward a shodan in Budo Taijitsu.

I took Judo for 2 years...and am looking forward to getting back into it again once I get the "ok" from the doc. Judo developed because of Jiu Jitsu...so they have a lot in common.

Topic: RE: So how long till you returned to training
As soon as I was cleared to drive (6 weeks) I went back to the gym for 30 min sessions with NON-COMBATIVES, basically just stretching and working on my patterns (the footwork, punching, took it easy on the kicking). At 8 weeks I went to full 60 min. sessions and working on patterns, stretching and such.... did not return to sparring and kicking or punching targets and such until I was almost 3 months out! My surgeon did not want me giving myself a hernia!
Good luck sweetie!
Brightest Blessings for a Wonderful Day~

I'm a Judo player in Atlanta- working out in Carrollton now at the West GA Judo Club. I used to compete a lot when I was younger (and smaller) and would really like to get back into national level competition... maybe even international again
I gained a lot of weight because of illness and can no longer just run more, eat less, more judo to lose weight. I'm hoping to have a RNY in December and be training by next summer. It's good to know there are some people doing Judo here! When I lived in France it was on TV at night, and gis were sold at any sporting goods store; here, people usually ask me to break boards when I say I play Judo... ;) Anyway, good to know you're here!
