Many instructors will adapt the program for you. In a good program, it is a great workout and an incentive based reward system. I made it to Sr 1st degree black belt weighing 265 lbs. I will admit, I had to work twice as hard as the skinny little people, but it was worth it. I had to take a sabbatical June '03 after knee surgery. Now that I have had my WLS, I am just waiting a few more months to get some more weight off and strenghten the knee before I go back, but I can't wait. I want my 2nd degree bad. There were people larger than me in our class. Although they will never be able to do the jump kicks as beautifully as the more able bodied, they are stronger in other areas. I know I learn something from everyone at TKD regardless of their abilities. Overweight people tend to be more precise with their movement and more well grounded in the knowledge of the art. Older people tend to have better balance. And as for the tiny young people, they teach me that humans can fly.
Good Luck

I am currently in Taekwondo with my husband and our five children. I am currently a green belt along with my children and my husband is brown belt. Three of our boys are ADHD. I believe you can do anything you set your mind to. We started this last year in June 2003 and my husband had done this before.

I've always been interested in martial arts but because of my weight I never pursued it. Well I went to enroll my son who has ADHD in a school and the instructor was very interested in helping me he said even at my current size I can start out training. He also wants me to buy some supplements called Advocare I'm trying to decide what to do have you ever run accross anyone who a size 30-32 womens doing Taekwondo do you think maybe he just wants to sell me stuff. I just don't know I'm so suspicious of everyone but he seemed very honest. Well hope to hear someone elses opinion. Bright Blessings

Hi everyone,
I had WLS on Oct 10th 2002 I started Taekwondo around my 2 months Post Op mark, I was about 250 pounds when I started, since then I have lost over 100 more pounds, competed in International and Local tournaments, took 5th place in last years International Womens tournament in South Korea and took Gold in a couple of tournaments here in California. I am currently a blue belt studying for my second stripe. I study WTF and I found that it is my true passion. The best thing about Martial Arts for me is it has taken the need for plastic surgery completely away. I have built lean muscles and my skin has tightened up great. Good to see there are others enjoying the journey.

I have 5 words for you: COURTESY, INTEGRITY, PERSEVERANCE, SELF-CONTROL & INDOMINENTABLE SPIRIT!!!!!!!!!! Chris,
I am a Gold Belt (some schools call it a yellow w/green stripe) in Tae kwon do. I am at 18 months out and I have the most trouble with spin and pivot kicks. They are considered advanced kicks in our school. One of my instructors keeps telling me that they take months of practice to get them right. I guess she could be right, coming from a someone who can clear my head (I'm 6'1") with a round kick.

I CAN RELATE WITH YOU ,IM PRACTICING JUI-JITSU AND WHEN I GET ON THE MAT I GET THOSE BUTTERFLIES ,BUT THE MORE I GO OUT I GET BETTER AND I DONT GET AS SCARED AS I WAS THE FIRST TIME. ANOTHER IDEA IS ASK YOUR SENSEIS TO WATCH YOU WHILE YOU SPARR AND ASK THEM TO CRITIQUE YOUR PERFORMANCE .THATS WHAT I DO AND TRY NOT TO LOOK FOR COMPLIMENTS CAUSE COMPLIMENTS WONT HELP YOU IN THE STREETS.
KEEP FIGHTIN' BY THE WAY IM WHITE BELT 5 MONTHS

Hi Laurie; thank you for the info on sparring. I recently did it for the first time. It was quite a lot of exercise! Very different from going through the motions. I am very sorry to hear that you have had to stop doing what you love because of your weight. I have read your profile and hope there will be some way you can get the surgery. I do know if you need to go "out of pocket" that you can finance it through www.capitalone.com. It at least is another option. Good luck!
