Emergency Room Notification of Bariatric Surgery

Ever since my surgery, I've often wondered what would happen if I was in an accident, had food poisoning or even accidentally poisoned myself with a drug or chemical.  If I was rushed to the hospital in an unconscious state could the fact that I've had bariatric surgery somehow kill me?  For example, what if I needed my stomach pumped?  What if an emergency room doctor ever stuck a tube down my throat?  I had the VBG w/sleeve so I do have a band. Am I being paranoid or is this is a legitimate fear?  Have any of you done anything to deal with this?  I'm thinking about putting my surgery information in my vehicle but that doesn't necessarily mean anybody will find it if I'm ever in an accident.  I've also thought about getting one of those medical alert bracelets but I can't stand wearing a watch let alone a bracelet.  As crazy as it sounds, the idea of getting a tattoo popped into my head... but quickly popped right back out again.   Anybody have any thoughts about this? --Eric

Many get the emergency medical alert bracelet which states "No blind NG tube".  Believe that Mo has one.  I've been thinking about getting one too.  I'll be keeping an eye on the responses to this post. TraciL

You could get a necklace instead of a bracelet.

Hi Eric, Traci is right, I do wear a bracelet.   I spend a lot of time in the car by myself and I got it for my own peace of mind even though my surgeon did not think it was necessary, until I explained my concerns about being alone and having an accident and not being able to communicate for myself. I chose to pay the money to 'join' the official Medic Alert website/organization.   I think the initial fee was $35 for one year and you get a bracelet/neclace with that.  I can't remember how much the annual fee is after that.   With Medic Alert you can update your medical information on line and when emergency personnel calls in with your number any special info that is not on your bracelet (including primary care dr, family contacts, allergies,  etc) is available. I don't even notice the bracelet any more.  It's on my arm and not very 'attractive' but I know that in an emergency I've done what I need to do to take care of myself. Best wishes with whatever you chose. Hugs, Mo

Comparison is the thief of joy!

If we spend our time comparing our life/weight loss/body to others, we totally miss what WE have accomplished.   Keep in mind how far you have come and what you can do now that you couldn't do weeks/months/years ago.   I hate the expression " It's all good", but in this case it fits!   Wherever you are in your journey  ... It's ALL good!!!

THANKS for the response.  That's exactly what I wantred to know.   I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking like this. I have an appt at my surgeon's office in about 3 weeks and I'd like to see what they have to say about it.  I'm concerned (paranoid?) enough that I'll probably do just what you did. --Eric
