Approved for surgery
I don't think anyone is going to start dropping coverage for bariatric surgery. Please don't believe everything you read on the Internet.
Gastric bypass has been performed successfully for nearly 50 years (http://www.asbs.org/html/patients/bypass.html) and is the only proven long-term method of weight loss. The New England Journal of Medicine has a great selection of papers on gastric bypass: http://search.nejm.org/search?w=gastric+bypass. So does the NIH: http://win.niddk.nih.gov/. All surgery carries some risk.
Any American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (http://www.asbs.org/) Center of Excellence will have documented low mortality and complication rates. Our data and our centers are audited regularly.
