THE FEED BAG
Not really any problems...except for Thanksgiving. As you know, I had the ensure drink at the hospital and had another one the next day here at home. On Monday of last week I started drinking my unjury shakes and drank them (and water) for 3 straight days. On Thanksgiving day I tried another Ensure and I think I had a mild dumping issue!! I felt cold and sweaty all at once, my heart was fluttering and I felt sick to my stomach....ugh...that was AWFUL!! Anyhow...that's it!! Been walking ... my chubby beagle is loving the walks!!
Sometimes I feel full, sometimes I don't. I've tried grits 3 times..and 2 out of the 3 I felt full real quick...the scrambled eggs were kind of blah last night and I don't think I even ate half of them (I only had 1/4 cup)...so I think I'm gonna stay off the scrambled eggs for a while...I think they're too much. I'm trying potted meat tonight...took a bite, waited 10 minutes...everything seems okay!!
Hey Marnie -
I'm sorry, I didn't see your response to me until just now. Yep, sounds like dumping from the Ensure. Since I'm certainly not a professional, I did question that you were drinking Ensure due to its high carb/sugar content. Personally, I'd stay away from them.
If you want to try a RTD (ready to drink) shake, check out the EAS Advant Edge (Walmart). They're thinner than most shakes, which appealed to me - the chocolate fudge tasted somewhat like Yoo-Hoo, and I use the French Vanilla as creamer in my coffee. It's specifically formulated for our needs.
I had difficulty with scrambled eggs - I think because of the pebble-like texture. However, I found that I did well with them if I topped them with some ricotta cheese and spaghetti sauce. Remember, it's all about being creative. I see a LOT of people do mashed potatoes - I never did, because even from day one, it was all about getting my protein in first and foremost. So even though the mashed potatoes taste good and may go down easily, they're really NOT giving you much in the way of what you need.
Ricotta cheese is pretty versatile - you can sweeten it with Splenda and add cinnamon or cocoa powder for dessert, or you can spice it up with basil, garlic, parm cheese, etc., and top with spaghetti sauce for a noodle-less lasagna. Basically, if you can puree it, you can eat it!! I agree with the chicken salad and tuna salad, also. I also did a LOT of pureed shrimp salad - a pound of shrimp goes a heck of a long way for us!!!
Hope this helps!!! Hang in there - it gets easier!!!
Hugs,
Tia
Have you tried Corned Beef Hash or Roast Beef Hash? How about refried beans with melted cheese? For the soft food stage I was able to do ground meats as well so I did alot with ground turkey (Turkey Chili, Turkey Meatloaf, Turkey Burgers, Turkey Sausage). Are you at that stage yet? You should also be able to do mushy veggies as well - cooked and without seeds or skin. Of course, that was my surgeon. Yours may be different. Do a search for The World According to Eggface. Her blog has great food ideas, I use it alot.
Hope that helps,
Heather
