Support Groups important??
Just a short run down of the Glen Burnie meetings. They are semi structured...We may pick a topic for the meeting or just swing it. There is never a shortage of topics to discuss...From 6-6:30p is informal meet and greet, this is when everyone is arriving, then from 6:30p-7p we make formal introductions, can testify with any NSV (non-scale victories) or SV(scale victories), then we usually have a topic to discuss from 7-8p...Someone may bring in a healthy low fat/low cal/low to no sugar food/snack they made for everyone to try, or as like we did last week, we spent the last hour doing line dancing and working up a major sweat...The people are down to earth and very helpful.
The last meeting is the first time we did that. We all had a lot of fun doing it and it got us up and moving after sitting and talking about how we were all doing and asking/answering each other's questions. It's very informal and not a big group, but it's definately well worth coming. We have even brought different WLS friendly snacks.
Hello and welcome to the MD Board!!
I believe support groups are a BIG part of your success as a patient. Because sometimes it feels good to know that other people know EXACTLY what you are going through and feeling. The whole surgery process is not only physical but mental so I would say support groups are a very important part! I currently attend the Crofton support group. Not only have I found I am glad to have these people around to ask surgery related questions, etc., but honestly I have made some great friends.

Hi and welcome to the Maryland Board, Jo!!!!
Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion, but I really feel that since you're pre-op, a hospital based support group is your best bet right now, and even for the first couple of months post-op. You'll find that you'll have LOTS of questions, and who better to answer them but your surgeon and his other patients? Since every surgeon has different criteria, it'll be SO much easier for you to follow his program with input from others.
That being said, I think you'll "know" if you want to stay with a hospital-based group or move on to a more localized group. There are definite benefits to both, as you'll find.
I encourage you to find what works for you, but at the same time, jump on in here anytime!! You'll find that we're a great group - very warm, welcoming and (sometimes) full of useful info!!!! And be sure to keep an eye out for our get-togethers!!!
HTH,
Tia
