Ok, I received a call from the clinic today informing me that  the insurance co needs a letter of medical necessity and 6 months of supervised diet.  So..as for the supervised diet thing....is it because they want you to prove to them that you can't lose the weight?  Will losing some weight keep me from getting an approval? What exactly are they looking for in the letter.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Just a tad frustrated.

WELL THE SUPERVISED DIET IS TO PROVE THAT YOU MADE ATTEMPTS TO LOSE WEIGHT ON YOUR OWN WITH NO SUCCESS. SOME INS. CO. WILL TAKE WEIGH****CHERS, OR SOME WEIGHTLOSS CENTERS. AS FAR AS THE LETTER OF MEDICAL NECESSITY GOES THE INS.CO. WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT HAVING THIS SURGERY WILL HELP IMPROVE YOUR CURRENT HEALTH STATUS FOR EXAMPLE GET RID OF HYPERTENSION OR DIABETES. MOST DRS HAVE YOU LOSE WEIGHT BEFORE THE SURGERY ANYWAY, SO IT WILL NOT STOP YOU FROM GETTING AN APPROVAL. THIS IS A NORMAL PART OF GETTING THE PROCEDURE , SO U R OK MY LADY.

The insurance companies all cover it pretty much now they just have to have their ducks in a row and make sure you either have a health condition that will improve with the surgery OR that you are atleast 100 pounds overweight. I went through it but you will do FINE!!! It will all fly by so fast honey. I promise! ;o)

My insurance also requires 6 months supervised diet and letter of medical necessity.  The bariatric clinic explained to me that the diet has different purposes - one that you are willing to make the necessary changes to your eathing habits and stick to them, and to prepare yourself to break that food addiction, as well as to shrink your liver for the surgery and to document that you have tried dieting.

My bariatric clinic requires that you lose 10 to 15 pounds before surgery anyway, so that's one of the reasons I'm bucking up and doing the diet.
