Topic: Career Step?
I'm thinking about getting my MT education from Career Step? Anyone out there a current student or grad with any experiences they would like to share?

Topic: really need help with work i can't find whats wrong please help
here's what they say i have wrong Listening/grammar-10 Spelling- 1 Formatting - 1 Punctuation- 8 OPERATIVE REPORT PREOPERATIVE DIAGNOSIS: Right ureter calculus. POSTOPERATIVE DIAGNOSIS: Right distal ureter calculus. PROCEDURE PERFORMED: Cystoscopy right retrograde pyelogram, right ureteroscopy was stone basketing in placement of right ureteral catheter. ANETHESIA: General endotracheal. Specimens right ureteral calculus enter op to complications, none. PROCEDURE: The patient was placed in the lithotomy position; her groin region was prepped and draped in the usual sterile fashion. Urethra was lubricated, 22 French cystoscope was advanced in the bladder, the bladder cystotomy was normal. The right ureteral orifice had some mild adema around it, an 8 French acorn-tipped catheter was placed into the orifice and retrograde pyelogram was performed under fluoroscopy. A filling defect was noted in the distal ureter approximately 3-4 centimeters above the ureteral orifice. The 11.5 French ureteroscope was then obtained, 5 French angle-tipped ureteral catheter was passed through the ureteroscope, both were passed in the bladder under direct vision and the angle-tipped catheter was advanced into the distal right ureter, this scope was then inverted and passed into the right ureteral orifice. Scope was advanced through the submucosal tunnel into the ureter and was carefully manipulated approximately. A yellowish to somewhat irregular calculus was identified in the distal ureter and a Segura stone basket was then obtained, it was passed above the stone and then the stone was ingaged and removed. Repeat retrograde pyelogram was then performed, there was no evidence for residual filling defect, although there did appear to be some spasm with limited drainage of the right dysuria, because of this I passed the ureteroscope again to be certain there were no stone fragments obstructing, there were none, and then I placed the ureteral catheter up into the renal pelvis under cystoscope for control. A 18 French Foley catheter was then placed at the end of the case and both the ureteral catheter and Foley were hooked to the gravity drainage. That patient tolerated procedure well. She was then excavated and then transferred to the recovery room in stable condition.

I graduated from Career Step and found the training to be great. It was easy to get a job because CS is a very reputable training course. If you want more info, go to www.homemedtrans.com and request information.

Hi. I work as a transcription coordinator for a surgery department. I do a lot of filling in blanks for my MTs, too. For one, that's what our job is. If you knew everything about what you were typing, we wouldn't have a job!! Anyway, we use Stedman's SpellCheck here, but I have found several terms that weren't in there. I use Google almost all the time. It gives you options from lots of different sources, some may not apply, but I think its good to look them over anyway. Also, for doctor names, I use healthgrades.com. It asks for the docs last name and state and then you can choose specialty and city and go from there. The addresses aren't always reliable because docs move so much, but at least you could find a spelling of a name. I also have tons of specialty books here in the office, but honestly, I have never cracked them. I use Google mostly and medilexicon.com. I don't always get good terms help there, but its really good for expanding abbreviations. Also, my MTs have an updated list of doctors that my doctors most often take referrals from. It's pretty extensive, but I update mine and reprint it every 4 months or so and it's really really handy. In my office, if the MT leaves a blank, I google it and if I can't find it after looking for a while and using different search terms, I highlight it and send it to my docs. They can usually fill it in no problem. Or if the doc is not in, sometimes the nurses can help. I would ask your boss if there are any references she likes to use for terms and if she could get you a copy of the address list. Keep in mind, that just because you're new at this (I graduated in May '06 myself) doesn't mean you have to take that abuse. You shouldn't have to know everything. It's called Quality Assurance. If things don't get better in the next few weeks, though, I would look for something else - even if you don't quit. Good luck. BTW, feel free to email me if you need help again. I can help you look. :) [email protected]

Topic: RE: can anyone tell me what grammer/punctuation errors im making- my school said i have like 5 of each
Hi Sandra, I was doing research for a lesson and came upon this web site. At the present time I am taking an online MT course and this is the lesson I am transcribing. What school are you taking your course through? How did you do on the resubmission? I passed the first assignment, but waiting on the second to be graded. Good Luck. Jeanette Lynch

Not that I'm an expert, but I do see a couple things. It's lying in the supine position, not on. That sentence also is not a complete sentence either. I get in trouble if I don't make it a complete sentence myself. Maybe try, "The patient is or was lying in the supine position, etc." Preoperatively is spelled preopertably in your report. On "The scan on subcutaneous tissues..." shouldn't that be was instead of were? Also, does the last sentence in that paragraph even make sense? It doesn't sound like it, but then I don't do this type of surgery. Hope that was some help. Have no idea what else could be wrong. Good luck!

I don't have a lot of experience myself, but I do know that Steri-Strip is spelled with two capital S's. I just typed it into a Word doc the way you do it and Stedman's spell check gave me a red line under it which went away when I gave strip a capital S. I have no idea what else could possibly be wrong, though. Good luck!

Topic: I need a clue, please.
I am currently working as a medical transcriptionist out of my home - have been for seven months doing operative reports. I got the job with no experience, just out of school. It has been my habit to just leave a blank or type in what I think the word sounded like when I come across something I don't know. My boss has just told me she is sick of filling in my blanks and correcting all of my work every day and I have one month to improve or she's firing me. My question is, how do you guys do the job? I have Stedman's spell check on my computer which helps, I have a Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, I am now using Google, Dictionary.com and Stedman's Online Medical Dictionary to try to find the words I don't know, or even doctor's names that they mention and I have to look up the spelling on Google and I also just ordered a Surgical Word Book which I hope will help. My question is, how do you all do this job? Do you all spend a lot of time looking things up all day? What resources do you use? Do you leave many blanks? Basically, I just need someone to tell me what is expected of me as a medical transcriptionist because my boss is no help with training and I REALLY don't want to lose this job. Please help me.
