Unique Pre Op Question on Veins

Just day before yesterday I looked down and had several veins popping up at the center of my breastbone near the sternum probably. My wife said, those are veins. I responded yeah, but what are they doing. I can trace these veins for at least an inch, they're visible to me, like poison tracks under the skin.
