My washer is dead!

My Sears Kenmore finally gave up the ghost last month after many years of faithful service (no telling how many years the previous owner had with it)  ..  It would still run, but when it came time to spin it would spin at only about 1/2 speed or less, leaving a bunch of water still in the clothes and some in the tub ..   My Sears guy told me that this meant either the drive belt was slipping or had stretched out, or the "transmission" was no longer functioning properly ...      Sounds like yours may have either had the belt break or the transmission unit go out completely (did you hear any unusual noises before it stopped working, and if so, for how long?)   My new Kenmore ($299 for a basic closet electric unit) works like a dream ..   They tell me the newer model washers now use a direct drive system instead of belts (kinda like record turntables did?)  ..  If your model is one of these latter units, it could be the motor has gone out completely on it ..    btw - still kicking myself I didn't get down to Sears on "Black Friday" ..  They were selling them for only $199 that a.m.!

I saw the title of the thread and assumed it was a fund raiser. I already had my Visa out. Not that anyone should give a **** but my dishwasher leaves a soapy film all over the dishes and my clothes drier runs until you stop it. Broken timer. I'm gonna replace one of them as soon as I get a free Saturday. It will just depend on which one has pissed me off the worst and the most recently. My washer on the other hand runs like a champ.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.

Go to the local hardware store, and get one of those clamp-on floodlights that the construction guys use. Put it so it's about 3" from the hose in question, and shine it while the washer is running. The 150-250 Watt flood lamp should keep the hose warm enough to prevent freezing while running the washer.
