Calcium blocks the iron.  My Nut explained this at support group a couple of nights ago. Joe

Calicummm, hey it got by the censors.

Calcium blocks just about everything, doesn't it? That's why they have used chalk to absorb poison, if accidently ingested. Hence some of the new supplements like GLA, which have Magnesium, Zinc and B's, but no Calcium.

Calcium and iron compete for the same digestive receptor sites, so if you eat both calcium and iron at the same time, you're only going to be able to absorb half of each. If you're an RNY patient you're already going to have some malabsorption so this is doubly problematic. Thus you should make sure you separate your iron and calcium intake (whether supplements or "real food") by at least two hours before and after.
