I currently have a Trek Calypso comfort bike. I truly started riding it this spring and have come to realize that I really enjoy riding again. Somehow I magically feel younger when I am riding. I still have a long ways to go in the weight loss department, but I am starting to dream about a faster, cooler bike! I am not sure what type of bike I should be looking at.
Around home, there aren't many trails, so it would be all hard surface roads. But I want to also be able to ride trails. I love to camp and there aren't always streets to ride on. I do have dreams of being able to do a century ride.
So my question is simply do I need to buy two more bikes, a mountain bike, and a road bike?
Any and all input is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
James
Great work, James! Looks like you've graduated to the next level of cycling --- "The Passion." Congratulations.
With RAGBRAI in your back yard, you have local access to one of the great annual cycling events (and challenges) in the world. Great goal for you and for me for that matter.
Regarding bikes, I have two - a Lemond road bike and a Fuji hard tail mountain bike. I use the mountain bike mainly as a commuter and my "mule" to pick up groceries, supplies and the like. I have panniers (bags) on it to haul stuff around. It's my pickup truck so to speak. I also take it out and hit the trails occassionally and also ride it around with my 10 year old daughter who also has a mountain bike.
You can use your Trek in a similar fashion I imagine so I would suggest getting a nice road bike. I got my Lemond once I got down to 275 pounds or so. It's carbon so I didn't want to crack the frame.
Enjoy the ride.

Boner -
Have you done RAGBRAI? Are you doing it this year? I had never even given it much thought before now. You have got me thinking. I am thinking that I had better start training for the 2010 ride. Wow, that seems like such a fantasy.
I went to an auction last night and picked up a Diamondback Wildwood for next to nothing. It is in the shop getting tuned up. It will make a better on and off-road bike. Now to start saving for a road bike.
Thanks!
